THE PICTURED ROCKS, Scenery of Remarkable Appearance Along _. Lake Superior’s Shores, << On the southern shore of Lake Surior, and some seventy miles west of hitefish Point, and a short distance edst of Munesing, are the famous lictured Rocks. These may >be described as a series of sandstone bluffs, r'sing in sag places abruptly out of the water to a height varying from 5) to 20) feet. Two features impart to the scenery its remarkable appearance, the one, the stranze style of the cliff excayations, worn away liy the action of the lake, and the other the quite—as strange way ortions of the surface have been colored y bands of brilliant colors. To the first is to be ascribed the name. (“Les l’ortails’) given the rocks by the French voyagers, -and to the many hues whieh the series of . lufls hold so _— is to be traced the American name of Pictured Rocks, It.is not known when this term was. firt applied.to them. The denuding effects of the water upon the ~ . cliflg ary shown for-a distance of about ‘ five yuiles': long the shore. There is no beach, the clits risihy-vertically out of the water. In visiting the rocks, two ways are tiken, by passing them in-a steamer, and in taking a boat at some of the nearest points, us Munesing; tho steamers run near enough in gool weather for tourists to o ain a passin ; view. In gong from east to west vw» noticed a few of the most important objects. .The Chapel is a yauited apartment in the rock, thirty or forty fect above the lake level; an arched roof ofsandstone rests on four columns of rock 80 as to leave an apartment about forty feet in diameter and the same in length; within are pulpit and altar. West a short distance of the chapel is Chapel river, which falls over a Ay. ledge fifteen feet high into the lake! The Grand feature of Partal .is the most. os a
the series ; it is 100 feet high »y 168 broad at the water level, and the. cliff is cut in rises above the arch, n:aking the whole height 175 feet; the great cave, entered through thé Portal, extends back in tha shape of a vaulted room, the arches of the roof built of yellow limestone. and the sides fretted into fantastic shapes by storm-driven waves. About a miie west is Sail Rock, a group of detacheil rocks, which bear a resemblance to the mainsail and jib ofa sloop; the height of this is aLout forty feet. Miner’s Castle, tive miles west of the Chapel, and just west of Miner's river, is the western end of the Pictured Rocks, and rsembles an old turreted castle with an arched portal : the height of the advanced mass in which the Gothic gateway may be recognized is about seventy feet anil the height of the main wall forming the background is 140 feet. In regard to an. other part of. the Pictured Rocks a writer says: “In ono place there stands ®& majestic profile looking’ notth—a woman's face, the ‘Empress of the Lakes.’ It is the eof her royal highness to visit the rock only by night, a Diana of the new world. In’ the day time search is vain; she will not reveal her) self; butwhen the low down moon ines epiee hold she’ appears, She . ito. the forth, not sadly, not sternly, like the old Man of the White Mountain, but benign of aspect, and so beautiful in her rounded, womanly curves, that the late watcher falls into @ dream of Endymion; but when he wakes in the ey dawn he finds her me and pf shapeless rock glistens n the rays of the rising sun. gee " About Sneezing. +} sneezes be wholesome,” says an old author, and “he that hath sneezed thrice turn him out of the hospital,” says the proverb, Of sneezing huwever,,as of other good things, it is possible to’ have too much, ‘ Famianus Strada, the author of a grave historical work, has a learned di‘gression on the subject of sneezing, and mentions one Pistor Suburranus, who died of a fit of it, expiring at the twentyfourth sneeze. In Aristotle’s ‘time men enerally sneezed twice, but since then the art of qneesing, like ether arts, appears to have vanced, an . a triple sneeve is now, we believe, considered the correct thing, The virtue of sneezing, however, depends much upon circumstances of time and peaked as'B in -the house,”:or ealamity will occur. CURE HEADACHE, Headaches are usually induced by costiveness, indigestion, foul stomach, or other derangements of the digestive system, and may be easily cured by the use of <Ayer’s Pills. Mrs. Mary A. Scott, Portland, Me?, writes: “I had suffered dreadfully from Sick Headache, and thought myself incurable. Disorder of the stomach caused it. Ayer’s Pills cured me entirely.” 5 CURE BILIOUSNESS. John C. Pattison, Lowell, Nebr., writes: “I was attacked with Bilious Fever, which was followed by Jaundice. I was so dangerously ill, that my friends despaired of my recovery. I commenced taking Ayer’s Cathartic Pills, and soon regained my customary strength and vigor; I feel certain that I owe my recovery to your invaluable Pills.” : CURE INDIGESTION. Ayer’s Pills act directly on the digestive and assimilative organs, influencing healthful action, imparting strength, and eradicating disease. G. W.° Mooney, Walla Walla, W. T., writes: “TI have suffered from Dyspepsia and Liver troubles for years past. I found no permanent relief, until I commenced taking: Ayer’s Pills, which have effected a complete cure.” Prepared by Dr. J.C. Ayer eran Sold by all CURE RHEUMATISM. Rheumatism {3 among the most painful of the disorders ‘arising from vitiated blood and deratigement of the digestive and biliary organs. Ayer's Pills relieve and cure Rheumatism when other remedies fail. S.M. Y., writes: “Recommended to me as a cure for chronte ‘Costiveness, Ayer’s Pills” havé relieved me not only from that trouble, but also from Gout. If every victim ‘of the disease would heed only three words of mine, I could banish Gout from the land. Those. words would be, ‘Try Ayer’s Pills.’ ” CURE PILES. Piles are induced by habitual constipas tion, debility, indigestion, or a mgt condition of the liver. A cure is ; effected by the use of Ayer’s Pills. John Lazarus, St. John, N.
