Page,
Thought it Wasa Highwayman.Tuesday night a Grass Valley gentleman had occasion to bring a large
amount of money to this city when
coming up in a carriage. Placing the
coin at his feetand a revolver between his knees he kept a sharp
lookout along the road for highway-,
men, Seeing something in the road
ahead that looked like the prostrate
body of a man, hestarted todrive past
cautiously, ready to shoot at the first
indication of an attempt to stop him:
. The horse became frightened, and in
» by one of the wheels struck a
bowler in the road. The concussion
threw thedriver out, and he had to
walk to town. “Lhe horse came along
all right at a a reaching a pile of lumber on™2ine-street—
the carriage was badly shattered.
The turnout belonged at Wellington's
stable in this esty. It is only neces_ gary to add that the object in the
road that caused the catastrophe was
hota man.
