They are now engaged ia having its dimensions considerably enlarged by an addition to the rear. Their growing’ business makes more room necessary. A Chinaman so drunk he could scarcely walk, and boiling over with idiocy, was one of the sights of Commercial street Monday evening. The mongolians like their toddy as_ well as any one, but they generally know when they have enough, which cannot be said ofa good many caucasians, ; Union: Oscar Basney has put on a new omnibus at Grass Valley, The weight of the body is upon the hind axle, and supported by strong springs, which makes its riding qualities as easy as a bugyy. We published yesterday’ that the State Board of Equalization assessed the Nevada County Narrow Guage Railroad at $140,850. These figures, although given us by an official who took them from the record, did net represent the assessment on all the property of the Company, as our informant supposed from a hasty reference, but only showed the assessmevt on that portion of the property lying in this county. The total assessment by the Board was $168,750, or $18,750 more than it’ is this year. . Business Houses Being Built. George M. Letter From a Member of Nevada Commandery — The Mountaineers Moliing Their own, J.H. Boardman, foreman of the TRANsortPt office, writes a private letter to a friend and from it we are permitted to make the following extracts ; ' San Francrsco, Aug. 20, 6 A. M. The work of decorating the city in honor of the Triennial Conclave of Knights Templar is now completed. Although yesterday was Sunday, the sound uf the hammer was heard in all directions, and up to twilight last night, stands were being erected in all eligible parts of the city for viewing the grand procession which takes place to-day. ' To give you an idea of the length of this procession, I will just say that the lines yesterday afternoon, ‘to attend divine service 8, @Xtended from Masonic Temple on Montgomery street almost to Mechanics’ Pavilion, the Sir Knights walking three and five ebreast; and yet-it was only an escort to--thé Grand Encampment, and being wolto turn out, a number did not participate; and it’ was well they did not. The immense building, which by the’ wa, has been most handsomely decorated with bunting, flags and Ma. sonic emblems, and is also further ornamented with glowing Crusade scenes painted on canvas, was a mass of humanity packed together. The body of the Pavilion, which had been reserved for the Sir Kuights, was not large enough to hold *them, and two of the Commanderies returned to their headquarters, Our own Commandery made a most creditable appearance and marched with the precision of old veterans. Much} credit is due to Majoy McBride,, our acting Captain General, for the ,ains and labor he has bestowed upon Nevada Commandery to make it proficient in the drill. Our muster roll here shows 75 in attendance and there is not a finer looking body of men, taken as a whcle, to be seen in San Francisco, all of which was remarked by the spectators, I will not attempt an account of the exercises, as they will be pnblished i to day’s papers; but they were very beautiful, and the march ng of 100 little boys down th? long aisle, all dressedin whit: surplices, accompanied by the clergy, ” chanting the ‘*Prucessional Hymn,”* made a beautiful effect,. Ou reachiog the front dour they filed on each side of the vestibule, and with tolded hands reinained standing uatil the Templars has passed out. Owing to our first of décoratiig our new place at 9094 Market street was not completed until yesterday. evening. It.looks very handsome. Natural flowers, woven into Masonic embleths, plants and shrubbery, evergreens, etc., are artistically arranged over the Hall, forming a very pleasing effect. Our Nevada friends, are making themhappy. The General Grand Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star of the United States have effected an organization, an will commence their regular. business to-morrow morning. Everything is very harmonious. Trouble About a Fence. Miss Jane Swift is fencing in some of her property over near the depot, and the building of the fence readers the residence properties on Prospect Hill very inconvenient of access. Some of the owners of the latter questioned her right to make the enclosure, but on Monday a committee of the City Trustees went over there showed that she was entitled to take in even more land than she had determined to. There was talx among some of the citizens living in the loeality to the effect that they would demolish theobstruction, This awakened the! indignation of Miss Swift to the extent that she flourished a hatchet before the eyes of the assembled multitude and formally announced in their hearing that if there was gny move in, the direction indicated the aggressors would be made to realize the power in her goodright arm. She declares that she will stand no foolishness whatever, even though she is a lone woman, ‘ oon Pn Should They be Examined? The opinion seems to revail,*that those teachers in our public schools who have never earned county certificates should be called upon to display their qualifications at the next examination by the County Board of ‘Education. The fact that they have where at some time in the dim and misty past does not to our mind indicate that they may not have forwotten a large share ofthe booklearning they once possessed, nar —_-—Cheap for Cash. Attention is directed to the new advertisement of Misses Bearnhard & Shallenberger, who are constantly receiving new goods and selling the same at the lowest cash prices. The -assortment of millinery, fancy goods, hosiery, dry goods of all kinds, etc., will be found very large at the Nine . Cent Store. : Fi Machinery Brought Down. A San Francisco telegram of Moaday evening to the Bee, says: From early this mornihg the city has been in commotion, making ready for the gtand procession of Knights Templar. At eight o'clock crowds of people might be seen hurrying from all quarters towards those streets along which it was to pass, and at the present liour Montgomery and PMarket streets and Van Ness Avenue are lined from one end to the other with a solid line of men, women, and children, determined not to be Behind time. The streets are filled with Knights‘on the way from their headquarters to the positions assigned them on Ellis, Eddy, Powcll, Mason and other points, from which they’ will emerge, falling into line on Market street as the procession begins to move. Mingled . with the sounds of music,-as the Bands accompany their several Cowmanderiés to take up positions, are heard the carpenters’ hammers hastily putting up stands and benches on a levelwith the first windows of the buildings, an which people can stand and see the procession to advantage as it passes by, These benches will within an hout be crowded, yielding large revenues to the enterprising contractors, At this moment the Baldwin. Hotel corner is the favored spot, as itisthere the Knights are gathering in greatest numbers and the position will permit sight-seers to see them fall into line from both Powelland Ellis street, — [alf-past 9 was:the official hous: set for the gathering of the Commanderiesby the Triennial Committee, but many o'clock, fearing that the’ crush on Market street might prevent them from reaching their positions in tine. Already one is enabled to form some idea of what this grand and splendid procession will be from the number who have already assembled and the magnificent spectacle they present, Looking towards the ferry, Market street is one mass of decorations, midway between the ‘two points being the triumphal EnglishGothic arch, decked as was never arch before since the Pacific was known to man, When to these surroundings oue pictures tohimeelf, an houror so in advance, of how greatly the spectacle will be enhauced as four thousand of the richest clothed Knights Templar in the world inove along in procession, some on foot and some mounted on jet
‘lack horses, each Commandery. led by a band of music, the conclusion is quickly reached that the people of this city are about to witness an event never excelled in magnilicence in any part of the world. At halt past nine thé streets, particularly Market, have become almost impassible, The crowd is simply immenge, representing not only all that San Francisco can produce of sightseers, but some 20,000 others who have come in from the’ other cities and towns of the coast to witness the procession, The assemblage of Knights is éach minute increasing, and thoughtfully 4,000 seem to have taken up their position, other Commanderies are still coming, and the scene: presented is momentarily increasing in interest, It is getting evident that the start will be delayed owing tu the difficulty of the later Commanderies getting through the streets, and 10 o’clock, the ordeted hour of ‘starting, sees them still awaiting the head of the column to come down Market street. Half past 10,and the start is still delayed, and itis now’ stated that it will bably be 11 o’clock before they get under way. In the meantime the crowd along the st ‘eets and in the windows and doors of buildings is growing greater, and those who have reserved window space in the expectation of a great demand at the last moment have not been disappointed, Five, ‘ten, and even twenty dollars, are being offered by sinyle individuals for the privilege of looking through a window. A whole window that two days ago would have been let for $50 could not be purchased this morning for $200, Half past 11 has afrived, and stillthere areno signs of astart being made. Nuclear reasons are aasigned for the delay beyond the fact that it is difficult to artaking part in the procession in the exact order laid down in the official programine, One o’clock has come and still they don’t come. The delay is being severely commented on, but it is difficult to determine the cause of it and it wold be unfair to attach any blame tu the Committee of Arrangements, every member of which 1s and has been working all morning like a Trojan. At twelve o’clock a ramor was started that the procession haf begun tu move but it was soon founi out tat it was a false alarm, As st . willaend a recipe that will cure you, FREE woult take two hours for the précession to pass a given point, and as c’vlock. ness by the Grand Encampment will they are coming! The first notificaway. Ata quarter past one the head of the column moved. forward, shape for iurther use, at one o’c ock if ad not started, the end of the procession will not have reashed the Pavilion much before 5] Don’r forget that J. J. Jackson Any attempt to convene for busigoods, sugar-cured hams, wines and probably be abandoned. Perkins at the-head, mounted on a milk white horse presented to him by Judge S. C. Denson, of Sacramento. As the Knights pass a continuous greeting is kept up by the spectators, given more especially to those Commandcross, The appearance of the Knights in procession is very fine, but the fault usually committed in long processions 1s here again observed, The procession it too much spread out, making it look lanky. They are still pouring fast. At the Park. Union: No better evidence of the growing popularity of Watt Park as a place of-public resort could be exhibited than in the number of visitors that daily go there. There is scaréely any time during the day or evening but what bugsies may be seen on the track, and on Sunday the people were there by the hundreds. At times there were from two to three handred persons on the grand stand, and buggies and horsemen were constantly passing sround the-track. As recreation grounds for our people the Park has come at once into popular favor, and deservedly so as it is a beautiful place. A Tide of Pleasure Seekers. Some one living at Graniteville has felt enough interest in the matter to keep an account of the conveyances passing through that town this summer @ route to the lakes, and reports the number to be 130 Many. of these went prepared to camp out, and with few exceptions they were more than a week on their travels. : I Congregational Benificent.
