Hard After Them.
Judge Stanley, of! San Francisco,
et venders. While his hand is in,
would it not be well for him to go after all of the members of the last
Legislature who voted for the San .
Francisco lottery bill, and also after
Gov. Haight who violated the Constitution and his oath of office by approving it? It strikes us that an action would lie against all those parties for perjury, and unless barred by
statute of limitation, we think they
should be indicted. Why ‘‘make fish
of one and flesh of another ?”?) Why
didn’t Judge Stanley go after the San
Francisco lottery men at the time .
that big swindle was gotten up?
_ Why has he waited until now, without raising his hand to strike a blow
at these violators of the law, as he
calls theth? There is something rotten in his conduct that deserves severe rebuke. If he is but doing his
duty now, it is an acknowledgement
that he failed to do it then. Wesay,
if you stop the sale of lottery tickets for schemes to be drawn in this .
State, stap the sale of all, the Ha‘vana as well-as others. All are illegalunder the law and they should
all be treated alike.
~@ov. Haight has a terrible sin to
answer for on account of demoralization of the people of this State, and
unless he does more repenting and
more praying, we fear his sins will
never be blotted out of the records of
the recording angel.
A Good ‘‘Goak.’’
One of the “circus” company that
perambulated the eastern portion of
the county list week, in closing up a
specch at the tail end of a meeting,
remarked that Le was now about severing his connection with the concern; that he had traveled with it a
couple of weeks, sometimes acting as
ring master, sometimes as clown, apd

and tight ‘rape performer in the

The Auburn Herald is after Judge
. Wallace and Jeems W. Coffroth with
. a@ sharp stick. It says, under the
. caption, ‘‘The German Vote,”’’ that
' “afew short years ago there was a
proscriptive party in this State,
. whose cry was, Americans only rule
. America—the red-mouthed 1Ash and
. hairy-teethed Dutch pauper immigrants mast be denied citizenship.”
. We remember well the time that
. Jeems W. Coffroth, Democratic can. didate for Congress, traveled all over
this State making speeches t6the
vpeople, in ~vhich he advocated the
above sentiments.
We remember well when Judge
Wallace did the same thing, and that
he was a candidate. for office on the
. Know Nothing State ticket, and: was
. elected too.
We can not for the life of us understand this attack of the Herald on
. those champions of the Democracy.
Can it be that the Ilerald is about
taking a ‘‘new departure,” and is
coming straight into our ranks? God
forbid ! for as sure as that day comes,
the Republican party will ‘‘depart”’
tothe place ‘‘where the woodbine
twineth."’ Coffroth and Wa!lace may
well exclaim: ‘‘Save me from my
friends !’’

Colenel Watt is a big man—a great
man—(in stature) a ‘‘purty’’ man,
;and a pretty clever fellow, socially
; speaking; but we have no idea he
has brains er capacity enough to
set the world on fire, or turn the
waters of a river so as to make them

he made against one of the best and
purest Democrats in this county—
Thomas Findley, Esq—and his defeat on that occasion, took the wind
out of the Colonel’s sails, and to-day
there is hardly a man to be found so
poor as to do him reverence,

. itis well they should pursue such a

justify Governor Huight, or answer
against him, _
Is it True? ;
__ We have heard it stated that two
years ago a certain copperhead, who
is now stumping it in this county for
our opponents, and who wasa large
quartz mill owner, and general Superintendent of his mine, coerced
the miners in his employ to vote the
Democratic ticket by threatening to
discharge them unless they did so
vote. Does the Gazette orGrass Valley Union want the name of that.
man? If so they can have it by
making proper application.
some years ago—in 1864—that if
there were any men in his employ
who would vote for Lincoln, he
to work along side of them for the
purpose of ‘degrading them.”’ Since
the negro has the ballot, this friend
of the working man has changed his
tune. he don’t think that negro labor is so degrading after all! Give
the Chinaman the ballot, and every
copperhead in thé land would pat
him on the back, and call him a good
fellow, or an “elder brother,’ and
ask him to vote the Democratic
ticket.
~ Women’s Rights.
Mrs. Elizabeth Cady Stanton will
' deliver a lecture at two o'clock this
afternoon, at the Theatre in this city.
. Her subject will be ‘Marriage and
Maternity.’’ None but women will
be admitted to this lecture. Every
woman in this city and county should

Stanton will lecture at the same
place, commencing at eight o'clock.
Subject—‘‘New Republic,”’ This
lecture will be open to all who desire
to attend. Every body should go to
hear Mrs. Stanton. She has a worldwide reputation as a speaker, and
her lectures are exceedingly interesting. See notice in another column.

Another Dlumination.
We understand that the Cops of
. Grass Valley have raised a thousand
. dollars to pay for the illumination of
this place on Saturday evening week,
in honor of Governor Haight. Well,
they have a right to spend their
money in tnat way if they see proper.
But what we would hke to know is,
where they will find houses in this
town to illuminate. Judging from
any of the charges we have made . What we saw the other night while
the town was illuminated, we should
‘. think that only one house in every .
tom was occupied by Democrats.
Why is it the Gops of Grass Valley
‘have~to raise money tailluminate
here?
