The Van Buren Vienna Expose.
That the United States’has escaped
if at all,.a national disgrace, that is
known throughout the civilization,
may be attributed to our Minister to
Avtria, Mr. Jay, says the San Francisco Alfa. It can scarcely’ be
cluimed that we have escaped, for
although the Commissioners ap_pointed in the place of those ‘suspected, accused, and suhsequently
proven guilty of corruption, did all
possible to remedy the evils resulting
from the rascally transactions and
sors, still the American portion ef
. were a pair ef. gold bracelets and a
further-assistance of that kind. We
shall be glad to receive in our work
the suggestions and advice, not only
of the bench and_bar, but aiso.of .
merchants, bankers, -teachers, miners, agrieulturalists, executive and
ministeral officers, and of other persens engaged in the various branches of business carried on in the State,
to meet them at our rooms, and to
receive their suggestions in writing.
Such suggestions will be more readily understood by us if they are put
into the form of legislative enactments, and this will also lessen our
labors.

the charges preferred and the actign .
altogether the truth of the charges.
~We are inclined not only to believe
him, but also. to defend him. But
upon second thought concluded to
wait awhile. For we. reccollected
that nearly twenty-two years ago,
when a resident and-a citizen of this
State, he was charged with obtaining
a seat in the Staite Senate by means
not at all honorable in those who
did the: tminipulating. Cxpt. Fair,
who had been the Whig candidate
against Van Buren, informed the .
i Dep he, Fair, was perfectly
~patisfied that he bad been elected,
but had been chested out of his
election by the minipulating of the
returns. We have had some very
significant instances of this system
in our own city. Recollecting old
times, we did not attempt vindicating
Gen, Van Buren, but awaited . the
report of the investigation ordered.
It has tore, and we are sorry to
"have to say that it does not leave
Gen, Van Buren in a very favorable
light. And as for hissecovd,; Mayer,
there is no cleansing alkali sufficient
to bleach his reputation to a decent
complexion.
This is a bad, shoWwitig for the
American name in the fave of the assembled Europe; together with a fine
wepresentation from South Atnerica,
Africa and Asia, We have notheard
thet any scandal of a mercenary
character attaches to any other Commission batourown. Egypt, Bradil,
‘Turkey, have not been dishonored;
we have been. Not merely in the
establishment of grog shops—for that
is the ¢errect term, however the
shame of ptaprietors may dislike the
name, howevét their genins may invent appellatieps cf less repulsive
‘soutid, such as ‘“‘saloon’’ “sampling
rooms”—but in ‘exacting a bribe for
the privilege und a division of the
profits, Such were the acts thatdisgraced the American name. And
now the question naturally arises:
What is to be the intluence of such
acts our own Exposition, three
years hence? Can-we expect other
. nations to exhibit ahy ‘such interest
in it as they would have been likely
to do had this disgrace been spared
* G3? What confidence-can they have
that a swindling, dishonest use will
not be made of our advantages, when
the whole Exposition will be within
our borders? If eur Government
