Page or Larkin.
It is now generally conceded that
*¢he fight for: Congressman ia this
District lies between Larkin and
Page. They are both residents of El‘dorado county and are old neighbors
and friends, They have each sever‘al times represented the people of
‘that county in the Legislature. ‘Phe
* official record of each so far as hon“esty. and integsity is concerned, is
‘unquestioned. They have always
been opposed to each other politically, Mr. Larkin ybeing one of the
‘maocracy, having opposed every
amendment to the Constitution,
while Mr. Page was an able suppor‘ter of the Fifteenth and cther Amend, ymments of the Constitution, guaran‘teeing equal rights to the colored
man, North or South.Mr. Larkia
‘not only opposed the passage of the
Amendment, but he is opposed to
‘ter hatred and senseless prejudice
“to govern him, when speaking of
~egolored men, that slave drivers did

“that.the Burlingame treaty sheula
be annulled, and_all the almond-eyed

This last feeling we know is found‘ed only on prejudice, for we ‘have
anthority to say that evan to-day bis

any sane candid set of''men, who
have heard Messrs, Page und Larkin speak, to say which of the two

Thrilling Experience.
The following story is teld by the
Ogdensburg Journal: A tramp, who
that city te Rouse’s Point on Friday
night, experienced a trip which was}.
well calculated to make an impression on his memory that will not
soen be eradicated. It appears that
the splendid pair of tigers and zebras which formed a part of the Hippodrome menagerie which has spent
most of the Summer there, were shipped that night for New Yori, via.
Ronse’s Point. The tigers were removed from their cage, pheed in
temporary boxes, and putin a’ box
ear. “The door of the car was left
partly open to allow a freé cireulation of air. The tramp, in looking
for a good place to stow. himself
away, came ocress this epen car, and
crawled in. After the train started,
the tigers became’ uneasy from the
rambling of the cars, having remaibed in a quiet state there for nearly two months. and tried to get out
of the boxes, The tigress succeeded;
and as she emerged from her coop
the tramp shrank back into a corner,
and remained*the rest of the trip as
rigid as a statue. The tigress, after
making an examination of the cur,
the tramp, laid dgwn at the open
door with her paws banging out the
rest of the journey. Inthe morning
when Herr Lingall came to look afoccupying the same position, and
was attempting to steal a ride from
in which she even lapped the face gf .
ter his pets he discovered the tigress.
