asi el .gankest specimens of Bourbon De—~e¢bem still. Hie altows the same bit‘the same class and coler prejudice Be Daily Transcript NEVADA CITY, CAL. ~ Tuesday, August 24, 1875 : all ot Page or Larkin. It is now generally conceded that *¢he fight for: Congressman ia this District lies between Larkin and Page. They are both residents of El‘dorado county and are old neighbors and friends, They have each sever‘al times represented the people of ‘that county in the Legislature. ‘Phe * official record of each so far as hon“esty. and integsity is concerned, is ‘unquestioned. They have always been opposed to each other politically, Mr. Larkin ybeing one of the ‘maocracy, having opposed every amendment to the Constitution, while Mr. Page was an able suppor‘ter of the Fifteenth and cther Amend, ymments of the Constitution, guaran‘teeing equal rights to the colored man, North or South.Mr. Larkia ‘not only opposed the passage of the Amendment, but he is opposed to ‘ter hatred and senseless prejudice “to govern him, when speaking of ~egolored men, that slave drivers did “pefore the war. We infer he is opposed to their education ‘at all, although he will not state so positive‘ly. Mr. Larkin pretends to bave ‘against Chinamen.“He says be de~' . tests and despises them. He asserts “that.the Burlingame treaty sheula be annulled, and_all the almond-eyed -pig-tails sent in a buneb to China. This last feeling we know is found‘ed only on prejudice, for we ‘have anthority to say that evan to-day bis ranch is managed and ran by C.inese cheap labor. Now we put-it to any sane candid set of''men, who have heard Messrs, Page und Larkin speak, to say which of the two is niost fit to represent the people of ‘this District in‘ Oengress; Mr, Page, ‘whe by his course in Congress Ss Local Brevities. pe ‘Hon, J. ©. Talbott & Canfield have about finished their job, which connects with the work let to Thomas L. Haghes. The prospect is very good for the entire completion of the P, Van Duzer, arrived iu thin city on Sunday night, and addressed the citizens of ‘this place last evening. We will give a report of the meeting Yesterday these gentlemen took advantage of the time they had, and_ visited several mines here and at Grass Yalley. R. B Gentry, of the firm of Kirk‘Nevada City. These works have a patrick, Cutter & Co., is in town. This firm is doing an immense business in the wholesale liquor lize,. and our people know Dick so well they send their orders to him, know‘ing fall well they will get the best of J. M: Cavis. Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor; will «ad. dress the people of Grass Valley, tomorrow evening, North San Juan on, Thursday evening, and Nevada City on Friday evening. Mr. Cavis is a good speaker, and we advise the people to turn owt in force to listen Quite a large force of men and horses have been vut to work on the tunnel near the toll _heuse, on the/yccess, They have asked for no Grass Valley road. The contractor is going to do his level best to have = _. We réceived a call this week, cays the Scientific Press, from ove of the centlemen'interested in the mucbtalked-of'¥ ryer process for working ores, which has been successfully tried en a small seale in Nevada county. Work will-shortly be commeticed on a larger scale ata place half way between Grass Valley and capacity of ten toms per day. The three or four fouadries in this city, is hearly done and the boiler and eugine are on the ground. It is expected that the new works will start jap on the 10th of September, at least. _The--company owning the pateut “is compused — of or fourteen persuns, most of them residents of New York city, Robert M, Fryer is the principal one. Mr. Fryeris not a mixer ora mill man bat is a natural genius and inventor, and a practical workman, The owners of the patent do not regard the process as an experiment at all, being very coufident from the tests already made, of its ultimate wouey to help them out, and will dirst work some mines of their own, It is coutewplated of course, after: awhile to sell the right for the process to different parties for a royalty, but at present nothing im tois direction has been arranged. In fact, they are not anxious for publicity and intend working their own ores city by the first day of November. Servant girls are in great demand her appearance in this city,in search of a situation, there is always a rush for her. Ounearrived here jast week, and after she had got a place, ten or fifteen persons offered her a situation. Good servant girls find no difficulty in getting situations here, — his bed, but yesterday he was somewhat better. The pubtie schools opened vesterand elsewhere ‘has shown that be is what he claims to be, an honest rep* . resentative of the people, opposed to. corruption of every character, a supporter and believer in the cunstite‘ttiomality of the I4th and ith . Amendments, aad an able worker for the interests of bis eunutiitwentes, or Mr. Larkia, who woe a cate!) dasing the war, anda aa Wiw ever nov ‘doubts the eoubtuhwiunulity of the two lest Amendments is the Constitution, and who comes before the . people protesting, yutil he is hoarse, his unswervering vpposition to Chinese, and yet employs them upon hia little farmin Eldorado county. Larkin'’s claimg tv popularity are based upon assertions; Page’s upon his record; ome speaks by words, the other by acts. Now, in the name of commen sense, who is best entitled to the support.of the people? There ean be no doubt as tothe answer which must be given to this ques‘tion; that answer will come from the people, whe speak through the ballot box, and if Democrats and Indepen‘dents have not become so bound by party thraldom that: they will vote for the nofijinees of their party, whoever they may be, Page will be sure of election., With only Mr. Larkin @8 an Opponent there would be no dioubt of the result, But in this contest there comes in a third party, who: has just personal sirength enough ¢o draw to his support sufficient votes to make the fight a very even one with the contestants. The candidate on the Independent ~——“‘tickethas worked -outin by-ways ‘and obscure places where no reporters could get on his trail and tell what tricks he is resorting to. If ‘‘Mr. Tuttle has no hope of being elected himself, he certainly ought *.to have some choice between the other candidates; and if he is s> selfish as to allow his few friends to stick to him-up tothe hour of defeat, we certainly think it is not their duty to doso,' but to vote for the Representative who will please them dest. a An unhappy individual has diswovered that there is nothing in the food or drink line actually healthfal. He says tomatoes produee canwcers, water distends the bowels, bread sours the etomach, cake destroys its tone, rice depletes the bloed, fish shrinks the muscles, fresh meat pro_ duces biliousuess, andwalt meat skin sliseases. The following story is teld by the Ogdensburg Journal: A tramp, who that city te Rouse’s Point on Friday night, experienced a trip which was}. well calculated to make an impression on his memory that will not soen be eradicated. It appears that the splendid pair of tigers and zebras which formed a part of the Hippodrome menagerie which has spent most of the Summer there, were shipped that night for New Yori, via. Ronse’s Point. The tigers were removed from their cage, pheed in temporary boxes, and putin a’ box ear. “The door of the car was left partly open to allow a freé cireulation of air. The tramp, in looking for a good place to stow. himself away, came ocress this epen car, and crawled in. After the train started, the tigers became’ uneasy from the rambling of the cars, having remaibed in a quiet state there for nearly two months. and tried to get out of the boxes, The tigress succeeded; and as she emerged from her coop the tramp shrank back into a corner, and remained*the rest of the trip as rigid as a statue. The tigress, after making an examination of the cur, the tramp, laid dgwn at the open door with her paws banging out the rest of the journey. Inthe morning when Herr Lingall came to look afoccupying the same position, and was attempting to steal a ride from in which she even lapped the face gf . ter his pets he discovered the tigress.
