THURSDAY, AUGUST 24.
BULLDOZING me PRESS.
“It is high time for the press of
San Franc’ Pilato $0 declare itself explicity in the debris question. — It
some of the daily journale of the
metropolis should lose a few thouaand subscribers in the valley they
oa awake to the fact that~ slickens is in politics and is there to
stay. Thenewspaper that will not
. give its aid to the valley in this con* ‘test is either cowardly or ea te
or both, and should be shunned b
honest men.—Marysville -Appeal.
The anti-miners are getting reduced to desperate straits. This
attempt to bulldoze the press, like,
all their other moves, will not be
~ likely to result te their advantage,
__The anti-miners are not as a rule a
reading people. The most of them
are shiftless, ignorant, narrowthinded, and in some parts of the
United States would be designated
as ‘‘poor white trash.” They are
not a newspaper supporting element.
On the other hand, the inhabitants
_of the mining sections are progressive, well informed on the topics of
the day, and liberal in thought and
purse. They patronize the press,
_ We warrant that in Nevada county
alone more San Francisco and Sacramento newspapers are paid for and
read than in Yuba and Sutter counties combined. We should like to
see the correct figu.es as to this
point published.
AN ISSUE.
Sacramento county should be, and
we think will be, unanimous on the
slickens uestion. gos Republican
ty vention adop' proper
utions-and fully pledged their
candidates upon this issue; and
seems as ifthe Democratic Ccnvention will not be behind in this rerd. “Self preservation is the first
w of Nature,” and the man who
will not take care of his own houseBee. ‘ts worse than an infidel.”—
The Lord takes care of those who
try to take care of themselves, and
in every mining county the slickens
issue will be the foremost local one
this Fall with both parties. Sacramento, Sutter, Yolo. and Yuba
have opened the ball, and the
minersare certainly able to give
them a Roland for every Oliver.
Everything our pecp!e own is at
stake, and we can only save it by
doing some good, hard fighting.
The Democrats’ and Republicans of
the mountains will not in’ their
‘county conventions attempt to dodge
this great local issue, we believe. It
would do no good if they did, for
like Banquo’s ghost it will not down.
