is continue, and it-is impossible to form an‘ idea of the magnitude of the channel, which so far has developed" azo boundaries. The permanency of ‘qhe find is no longer a matter of any doubt, .If not. another inch of drift‘gng was done, a very long tite ‘. would elapse before the gravel now '“.witbin reach could be disposed of. Phe capacity of the hoisting works, how“over, “will permis. of five hundred tons being raised each day, and it will not be long before they will be tupted to that extent. The first ladies who ever went into the Derbec mine were Mrs. ‘Thomas Mein, and Mrs. N. P. “Brown, who were taken down in ‘one of the new cages, on Thursday Jast. During their presence in the lower depths, these ladies secured _some very rich specimens, many of which were to be readily detected on . every: hand. Unaccustomed although they are to visiting mines, and conseyuently unversed regard-, ing-ordiaary signs of gold, they say that in the Derbec Bonanza it would be necessary to close their eyes to ~ shutout the sight of the glittering gold, Whilein one of the drifts “they picked up between $7 and $8 worth of specimens. _ In the face ‘of figures and facts, some incredulous bodies have insisted . ~ that the TRANSCRIPT has in its references to the Derbec mine overrated ite true value. We not only deny that assertion, but claim that the half has not yet been told, -Betore long a well-poeted reporter will visit the mine, inspect it thorough‘ly,to. his own satisfaction, andgive to our Many readers an exhaustive and reliable account of this warvelous mine. The fact that: ot _ a ehare of the stock is offered for sale, je sufficient evidence that there would he av object in placing a false estimate upon the vglue of the mine. The Black Lead was located iu 1862, by Jones und-Mills, and originally au iuclipe was sunk upon the claim lo the depth of 90 feet, and rich rock and specimens takenout. Afterward other persons became iuterested, and steam hoisting works were put up at a point farther portb, and an incline put-down 250 feet. The theory was thai the pay chute dipped to the north, and should be found in tba uew inchne; but as it was nct found, there, work was. discontinued, and the claim has remained idle for many years until recently, whes Mr,, Jones made a re-location of 1500 fee, on it, and went to work to clean out the originul ipeline, which bad filled in to near the-surfuce. He cleaned out to the depth of 90 feet, and had suuk but a few feet in new ground until he struck rich ‘pay, which has so continued until the present depth of the incline, which is now about 107 feet deep. Driiting and breasting has wlso been carried on until a Gnftisin about 50 feet. About 17 fine ruck, and the rich specimens coxtinue to be found the deeper the incline is carried. As there is no pumping machinery on the claim, sinking can only be doe as the water recedes, which it gradually does. as the dry season advances.
