AUGUST 26th:
ad ) FOR PRESIDENT, :
ABRAHAM LINCOLN.
«ame POR VIOBPRESIDENT.
ANDREW JOHNSON.
LINCOLN AND THE CorpPeRHEADS.—The
Express-and papers -of -like ilk are oxer~ 4
*gising themselves. considerably in regard to
the” chances of Lineotn ond Johnson, the .
nominees of the Union Convention being
OK alow by. tio Onl patty
These Journals Gave at Inst, after many state
ments from copperheads to the contrary,
been forced to admit that Mr. Liheoln has
accepted the nomination. Now, they have
discovered a disposition on the-gart of Union mento abandon party and principle, loyalty and the country, for-the' purpose of ase
sisting into office our empty headed, politi.
eal bummer, who parts “his hair in the mid»
Fremont. Tho Marysville Express: which .
of course is good authority (7) announces
that. the Union men on Bear river hiave des
termined to support Fremont. Then they
arraign Mr. Lincoln for not receiving u few
irresponsible men who communicated with
«« Horace Greely, from the Canada frontier
theit’ desire for peace, without any authori»
ty from the Confederacy, and even had they
been vested with authority tu negotiate; the
terms were inconsistent with national honor
and could vever be accepted. What the obs’
ject of these journals can be is beyond our
comprehension, unless it 1s for the same
reason-that-a--coward~ whistles in the®dork
to keep up courage. They certainly cannot
imagine that the vaporings will have any
effect upon loyal men. They can’t expect
that their denunciations will destroy confidence in the Administration, Union men
would as soon expect to dee the falls of Ni.
agara dammed up with cobwebs as to see
ono of these treason mills “grind out” truth
in regard to the present Administration.
The Marysville Express “norates” as follows in regard to the coming contest for
the Presidency : *
“With certain defeat staring them in the
: face, the desperate leaders of the Republican party are casting areund-for some
means to get rid of Lincoln, as a man whose
will no longer serves their purpose. They
dare not, at present, openly repudiate his .
nomination, but they are pr aring to do BO.
The leader of the party in this State, Jobn
Conness, we learn, has openty denounced
Lineoin, and has laid down a programme for
the election of five Presidential Electors in
California, unplédged for any candidate.
Conness has just come trom the East, and ie
doubtless deep in the’ secrets of the prime
conspirators at Wushingtun, and we expect
tosee the same policy develop itself in-other States asa part of the same programme.”
How ‘astoundingly wise fs the “old owl’
of the Express! The labor which the discoveries above made must have been very
exhausting, Tie object. is apparent. The
copperheads have lost all hope of success unless the Union party oan be “demoralized.”
If they can engender discord and diversion
in that party they have hopes of success.
and no effurt will be spared to bring about
sugh 4 result before the next election. But
press speaks of the Union party “with cers
tain defeat staring them ih the face.” -From
whence does the stare proceed? Certainly
not from the party of which the Express is
the exponent, for the stare of the clammy
sweat of death is upon that party. Neithet the copperheads nor path-hunters can
Reta single Electoral vote in this State.—
Union men understand the issue in the
coming combat and they will meet it in solid
column, anitedand determined. to secure
the election of Lincoln*knd Johnson. The
State Convention which is to select the Eleetore for this State will put the Union party
in ite true light upon the record. The copperheads will have to take another ebift

COPPERHEAD papers say the isaue in the
coming contest is “war or peace.” They
are in favor of a piece—the rebels having the

EASTERN News.—The advance of Warof Petersburg, on the 19th, was followed
by a determined attack, in which the corps
of Hill and Beauregard-took part. ‘The attack was a partial surprise, and might bave
resalted in a rebel victory but for the timely arrival of the Ninth Corps, which equalized the -forces, and after a bloody conflict
fell Warren held the railroad. The Union
loss was about three thousand killed, wounded and missing, a large number having been
captured early in the fight. The rebel loss
in killed and wounded was greater. It is
supposed that the affair south of Petersburg
developed into a battle on a grand scale on
Sunday.
There is nothing important from the Shens
andoah valley. The rebels are said to have
& heavy force there under Early, but he
i@eps on the defensive.
A Mobile paper of August 7th says the
Mayor of Mobile has ordered nou-combattants out of the city, and urged the citizens
to defend the city to the lust. Granger's
forces are within five hundred yards of Fort
Morgan: The surrender of the place was
hourly expected. —
The Tallahassee was spoken on the 20th,
fifteen miles distant from Halifax, off Cole
Harbor. It is-understood that she is the pioneer of a number of these vessela, which
are now being fitted out ‘at ‘Wilmington, N
C., some of which are ready ‘to run out.
It is ascertained at the Treasury Departs
ment that there ia no truth in the report
thot the Secretary of the Treasury contemPlate a new loan, the terms of which are nut
declared. '

The gigantic Rio de la Plata has so gentle
