+e The Daily Seauseziyt. NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA, . = Scnoo, Matrexs at San JuaN.— The Grammar School at.\San Juan is under char.e of Mr. Stoddard,:and the ‘Primary under chafge” if Miss Miller. __ Both are live teachers, and pupils at"tending their schools aré making tapid . . «advancement. The Primary school numbers about sixty-five, and the building rented for the school room was too small for their accommodation. The Trustees, therefore, determined to bnild anew house, They have secured a a first-rate lot and raised sufficient money, by a tax, to build a good school edifice. The new building will cost between $1,500 and $2,000. The people of San Juan have always liberally. sus_ tained the pubic schools, and this fact alone is a good recommendation of any community. The Public Schools of our land are the Nation’s nurseries, and where they flourish thé love of country will prevail. ~ a “Tue CHANNEL Company. — The gravel bed of Squirrel Creek has been located in the upper part of Penn Valley, and it is the intention of the locators to drain the same thoroughly.— Squirrel Creek—was extensively and very profitably mined in early days, but a considerable part of it, below the Portuguese hydraulic works was never touched and is still virgin ground. As the creek runs flat. below the canyon, an" Ymimense gold deposit may be expected in the channel, and with a good pumping arrangement a rich harvest of coarse gold will shortly be gathered in. All of the machinery can be driven by water power. Penn Valley contains good gravel, but the drainage requires some expensy. Untow Meetina.—On next Saturday night Dr. E.B, Harris, of North San, Juan, will address the citizens of this . place at the G room. This case was tried once before, but a new trial was granted by the Supreme Lowrer CHANNEL Co.—The Lower Channel Co. has located three thousand feet in the channel of Squirrel Creek in Penn Valley. This ground is located immediately below the Channel Co’s location; which was noticed by us several days ago. A Bacx Down.—Yesterday a Demoeratoffered to accept a bet from a Republican who proposed to stake $100 to $75 on the general result. They went to put up the mcney, and the Democrat made a square “back down.” : 7 YESTERDAY a gentleman who has ’ heen a Democrat up to this time, was in this city, and declared his intention to abandon that party, and vote for Grant and Colfax. He said he ‘was tiyed of the secessionism of Democracy. “Tuanxs.—The Pacific Union Express Co., has our thanks for San Francisco and Sacramento papers, laid upon. our table yesterday ahead of the mail. Tax BANNER.—A banuer containing the names of Grant & Colfax will be swung ac:oss the street in front of the Club Room to-day. It is four feet and ahalf wide, and forty-five feet long. The letters are more than three feet high. 3 SocraL Party.—John McGibbins will give asocial party at his house on Deer Creek, on next Saturday week.
