The Arizona Citizen of a recent date in speaking of General Stoneman says: General Stoneman, the Democratic candidate for Governor ‘of California, isa fine people’s man. When commander of the department of Arizona he was guilty of cruelty to the poor private soldiers who were under his. command which markshim by a courtmartial, convened at Prescott, June 15, 1870, and sentenced to and Philip Lee, both privates, to have their heads shaved and be ‘‘indelibly marked with a letter ‘D’ two and one quarter inches long.” These inhnman sentences were approved by Colonel George Stone nan, then commander of this department, now the Democratic nominee for Governor of Californis. The process of “‘ndelibly marking” is by branding with a hot iron, and the man who could approve of such sentences is not a fit man for any official position. YRS 4 DANGEROUS SECURITY. ~~ that in the debris troubles now raging ‘‘the drift miners may rest secure,” the Sierra County Tribune asks: Secure on what? Secure on the faith of men who are being led by the nose to their own destruction by a corrupt and venal press? Secu e from the blackmailing plans of an association of plunderers that has stolen more than seventy thousand dollars from the pockets of its victimized dapes within a period of eighteen months? Secure from thé schemes of a gang of unconscionable lawyers who fatten alike upon public credulity, or public disaster ? ‘This is the kind of security that the devil offered the Son of Man when he promised him all the kingdoms of the earth if he would fall down and worship bim. Like their Divine Saviour, the miners of California want sone of the devil’s security. They have that faith in their owa __—eourage and resources which warrant them a-secarity that is unimpeachable, without other price than a reliance on their own manhood. a RE WHAT THEY WOULD THINK. The Virginia Chronicle asks what would be thought in England: shonld the authorities of this country “‘arrest and detain Herbert Spencer on his arrival hére and subject him to the indignity of having his private effects pawed over by officiale in quest of some evidence upon which te convict him of crime against the To this question the Daily Report reolies: If Herbert Government ?” Spencer were over here fomenting rebellion against the Federal Government, and writing home letter after letter abusing our Government and our institutions, and was also in active and close association with men whom our Government. regarded as dangerous characters, they would probably think in England that-if Herbert Spencer had minded his own business he would not have got into trouble.
