et eieemnaaenscamnatnomenahe The Nevada Daily Transerip, Pablished Daily, — Excepted, BROWN & CALKINS. “ WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27, 1884. ee QUESTION OF DUTY. District Atto:ney Ford considers it an injustice to connect his name in any way with the serious charges ‘made by theSan Juan Times against two members of the Buard of Supervisors, As a public journal, the Transckret is a faithful guardian of the good name of Nevada county and its officers, and whenever they are in avy way. assailed it must become ‘thoroaghly convinced of. the good foundation of such assault before juin‘ing in the cries of detraction, Ou the other hand, if we ever fiad a public Officer taking advantage of his position-to filch from thecounty treasury directly or indirectly, or flyiug iu the face of the law, woe be unto him. Mr. Ford’s nome was men-: tioned yesterday because we fiud that as prosecuting officer fur the peuple it is his duty to institute proceedings . against any persons charged with or reasonably — suspected of public offense, where he has information ‘that. such offense has been committed. Surely, the charge made by the ‘Times deacribes a public offence, and it has been brought to his notice by that journal, . As stated yesterday, we cannot believe it to be trué without no bearing on the case. It should be investigated with vigor an‘l honesty, letting the accused stand or fall by the result, 1t will not do to pring our public officers into disrepute without good resson, and the originators of such charges should be celled upon tu either prove what they say or make the amende honorable. We deem it Mr. Ford’s duty, as the lezal adviser of the Buard, to call the attention of President Day to the matter, if Mr. Day does not act promptly of his own accord, and require him to convene an extra ses: sion of the Board to investigate it. IRE ETE AE TTL ETSI A Ox of the arguments against the Central Pacific Railroad, urged by Charles A. Sumner-iu bis specch put forth in pamphlet form all over the State, is that the Government has already paid the Company four times its worth and doesn’t own it yet. Saying nothing of the verity or the falsity of the assertion, and without regard to~the Company, what is There are tenanta all over the State _. and everywhere who have paid rent ten times the worth of the property they occupy, and yt they do not own it. To own property you must buy it, It is to prejudice the people against railroads that such arguments are used, Ir is quite as important that we should have a Republican Congress to prepare laws which shall protect the industrial interests of the country as that we should elect a Republican President to approve and enforcethem. For this reason every vote fer Blaine and Logan in this Congressional District, should be clinched with the name of Louttit for Representative. To vote effectively we should vote consistently, >_> Howarp Marin, aged 45, a pris: oner in the Sin Mateo county jiil, ate a piece of bread which the jailer had strychnined for the benetit of rata, and went alcft. —_— +e Tue Domestic Sewing Machine Compsny of Newark, N.
