Some of the San Francisco papers did not notice them at all, and one said there were seven of them. . Newspapers, like: 28 are liable to. err. —_—— —20 Beats Them All. There is no use in trying to disguise the fact that the Pacific Coast newspapers display a degree of en-. terprise that is equal if not superior to that with which the press of any part of the world isimbued. Noone who appreciates a master-piece of work in this line, can have failed to “notice with pride and pleasur@ the] magnificent editions that have becn issued from the office of the Chronicle during the week of the Conzlave, Let people say what they will about that .paper, they will not forego reading it, Conclave or no conclave, it is without doubt the chief of all its California competitors, Its wonderful press gives it advantages over them that they cannot overcome, try as they may. Dew _. They Held Their Own. The San Francisco Daily Report says: “The Knights from the interior ‘have contrbuted se much to the success of the Templar demonstration in this city that they deserve the warmest thanks of San Francisco. The city and the country have acted in thorough unison.” As a gentle. man who was there, -but does not belong to the Masons, says: ‘‘The “members of Nevada No. 6 took the cake from most other Commanderies ” both in sociability and appearance. They averaged an inch taller in stature than the tallest men from any other part of the country, and their hearts are constructed on the. same extensive scale as their bodies.” — Seriously Hurt. Daniel O'Donnell, while going from this city to his home on Gold Flat last Saturday night, was thrown from his horse and received serious internal injuries. Justice Blakey has been kept bisy for a few days past with criminal basiuess. : Irene Edwards, who hangs out on Pine street, was fined ten dollars yesterday for disturbing the peace, Henry Damon and Dad Edwards had some trouble the other night in Mrs. Williams’ restaurant on Commercial street. Both have been arrested. Mr, Damon will be tried tonight and Mr, Edwards’ case will come up to-thorrow evening, Nellie Ralston of the ‘brown house” has been arrested for disturbing the peace. At latest advices from court her trial had not been set, . George Weston, who claims to be a saloon keeper at Sacramento, and a pretty “seventeen year old girl named McMullin, whose parents reside below Grass Valley, were married last April and went to Sac:amento, to live. A few days ayo tl. ey separated, Mrs, Weston coming ‘to this city and taking apartments ati the Forest House on Broad. street, Weston learned her whereabouts, and arriving here Sunday evening went to the place where she was stopping and insisted upon her’ returning to him. She refused, and during the proceedings that followed no effort to use it, He was arrested by Marshal Baldridge and Officer Venard and locked up in the city prison over night, -Yeeterday morning-he pleaded guilty to a charge of disturbing the peace and was fined ten dollars, which he paid, at the same time expressing his regret that he had been so rash as: to get into such a difficulty. He says he will be perfectly satisfied if she quits her present life and returns to her mother, She agrees to do this, but.wants an officer to accompany her, declaring that she will not go there with her husband who she’says bas treated her outrageously during their wedded life. She claims that it was through his influence and at his request that she first entered a house of prostitution, She is known here as ‘‘May Ray.” Ah Won, arrested for isle the sluices of the Eureka Lake , Company, was re-examined yesterday before Justice Blakey and held over to answer a charge of grand I. .rceny. His bail was fixed at $1,500. A. D. Mason appeared as his attorney and District Attorney Ford prosecuted. A. P. Clarke yesterday swore out a complaint in Justice Wadsworth’s court charging J. H. Leopold with drawing a pistol on him and threatening to shoot. Mr. Clarke lives in the vicinity of Quaker Hill, and Mr, Leopold is agent there for the South Yuba Water and Mining Co. The latter has had some trouble with his wife, and yesterday morning accompanied by her sister she went to the house in Mr, Clarke’s wagon to get her trunk and seek an abiding place elsewhere. According to Clarke’s statement, Leopold pulled a pistol and threatened to shoot if he did not immediately leave, which he did, Clarke further states that Leopold compelled Mrs. L. to remain at the house, her sister also staying. O/ficer Scott went out yesterday afternoon to make the arrest. L2opold and Clarke are men who stand well in the community, and we are surprised to learn of the former’s warlike action. Mrs. Dalaty Explains. Mrs. Laura E. Dainty comes out with her explanation of the rampus that some of the narrow-minde1 Oakland church people have kicked up about a reading she recently gave in that city, andshe seems to have the best of the battle so far. She says ‘‘Monie Musk” was the only piece she read that was not agreed upon, The selection that shocked the ‘‘Chadbands and Pecksniffs” a she calls them was ‘‘Brother Ander. derson’s sermon,” written by that eminent and able preacher, R-v Thomas K. Beecher. It seemed very strange that so well bred and reputable a lady as Mrs. Daitity should have even thoughtlessly been guilty of what was charged, viz: Reading a sacrilegious piece in a house of divine worship. There certainly is‘ nothing out of the way about ‘Brother Anderson’s se: mon.” +o New Mail-Bag Vocks. The Postoffice Department is now distributing new mail-bag locks among the several offices. These locks differ somewhat from the old, and it was claimed that the change was necessary because the old-style lock had been so long in ase that mail robbers may. have duplicate keys with which they can peemily open the mail bags.
