SUCH CONSISTENCY.
The Marysville Appeal sets up 8
loud how! because in some of the hydraulic mines of Sierra county Chinese areemployed. We challenge the
Appeal to point toa ranch in the
valleys of Yuba or Sacramento counties where there are not at work ten
Chinamen toone white man, and
_ where preference is not given to the
Mongols. When the Chinamen were
discharged from the hydraulic mines
of this county two years ago, one of
the brightest of them said to a Nevada City merchant, ‘‘We no care.
Plenty work down ranches, They
likee us better alle same melican
white man.” It was thetruth, and
yet the Appeal would have the pbople think it is the only the hydraulic
miners who employ Chinamen. Out

and deception.

The Boss Coffée Pot beats all othHe also supMargatheir own expense went to San
Francisco on invitation to help swell
the procession of last Friday. The
command is nota vain one, never
seeks newspaper notoriety nor solicits the attention of reporters. It
is therefore all the more proper to
point out how on Friday last the
command was the victim of its own
modesty. ‘They arrived on time at
San Francisco, and were highly comneat appearance and soldierly bearing. It might naturally be expected
that the self-lauded, enterprising
journals of San Francisco would have
been enabled to have secured reporters capable of distinguishing between the troops or ascertaining the
facts. One of these papers speaks of
the Sacremento regiment,as the
Fourth, and mixes up the command
with others so that it leaves a doubt
in the minds of their readers whether the Sacramento boys were there
or not. The Cadet company, the
Governor’s Guard, is spoken of and
highly complimented as are the San
Jose Zouaves, but it remained for
another enterprising Bay journal,
which claims to be par excellent, the
only Simon pure, the absolute accurate and correct, never te be mistaken and always right, which elevates
.its tip-tilted nose at all the reportorial efforts of other journals, to speak
of “our boys” as the Artillery Regiment of Sacramente, saying that it
appeared in. line with ‘twenty-eight
pieces of artillery, there rode on each
gun carriage four men, and they
looked exceedingly fine with their
white helmets and, red plumes, , All
other mention is eqnal!y untrue. It
perhaps is hardly necessary to say
that the First Artillery Regiment is
of the Fourth Brigade, It did not
take any tield pieces to San, Francisco, and does not wear white helmets with red plumes. In short,
the First Artillery regiment was
not mentioned by the two journals
referred. to. If the enterprising joatnals of San Francisco give as correct
areport concerning all tLe features
of the procession, (what confidence,
if any, can be placed in their reports.
When a Sacramento reporter gets
color-blind, and as badly off as seems
the Bay reporters did on this ovcassion, he gets fired. Another paper
speaks of a few-Sacramento companies and wholly ignores the Colonel’s
staff and the Woodland company.
Still another speaks of a. command
under Colonel Sheehan, but does not
classify them, A leading evening
journal, which devotes several columns to a description of the procession, ignores the First Artillery entirely. ve

Yardstick and the Other Boarders
Trust Not the *Tale—Certain . Deductions.
‘‘How hizh was that? Just read
that again,” sang out young Yardstick, one of our boarders, who is in
the dry-goods line, to Professor Seedling who sometimes read aloud a paragraph, after supper. The Professor
complied, lending the beauty of his
voice to the following statement:
“In the year 1773 a Dutchman
named Roggewein discovered Easter
Island, and reported that the men on
that island measured twelve feet in
height, although the women were
commonly not above ten or eleven
feet high.”
“Well,” said young Yardstick, ‘‘in
my opinion he was a Flying Dutchman and a lying Dutchman,” and
the other boarders agreed with bim,
While nobody desires American
ladies to be giants, all would be delighted to see them well and strong.
Yet a thousand causes combine to
keep a large proportion miserable,
Too much confinement in heated
rooms, or in the same house, multiplied domestic and family worries,
want of sleep, little illnesses hard to
describe, but peculiar to their sex—
are the wolfish pack that drive the .
women “half out of their Leads.”
