Fire and Loses of Life, .
A little before three o'clock yesterday
morning, onr-citizens were aroused from
their slupibers: by an alarm 6f fire, and the
ringing of the bells at the honses of the fire
companies. . -Ghe fire had taken in a house
on 8p street, above Bridge, owned by
L. , and in a short time that and
the house next above, owned ‘by Hamilton,
were enveloped in flames. . The heuse in
_ which the fire originated was occupied by a

her uginess was that. of a nurse. George
Allyn, who lives iv the second house above,
heard the woman screaming, and rushed to
the place as soon as ‘possible; broke open
the front door, saw her lymg on the floor
and attem to drag her out; but he lost.
his hold, fell ack, and the heat was so intense that a it-impossible to return
to lier f She was apparently lifeless.
Allyn was onvenslay burned on his face,
necked Bangs, and*his hair scorched.
The hose carriage of No.1 ‘was brought cn
the ground by some young men. who had
been ata dancein Temperance Hall, and
that of No. 2 arrived soon after. In less
than five misiates fromi the time the alarm
of fire was given, the firemen had it undr

Hamilton estimates his loss at $450; Guscetti’s house was worth $300 to.$400; Watson's loss, includmg damage to house and
removal of furniture, was about $300. In
the house occupied by the woman who per' ished in ‘the fire, there was no furniture of
any value; and we presume $1,200 or $1,400
will cover the entire loss of property. We

Shooting Affray.
A serions shooting affray occurred at You
Bet about half past twelve .o’clock yesterday afternoon. It. appears that a man
named Tim Scantlin got intoa quarrel with
Capt. Cuvilla, when the latter left and
_ crossed: the ‘street to his own saloon.
Scantlin followed him, when Cuvilla got a
pistol and.warned him not to come into
the'ailoon. Ncantlin persisted in going in,
and.as he entered the door Cuvilla raised
the and fired. The ball struck
Scantlin justbelow the throat, and came
out under the. right. armpit, inflicting a
wound thatit was supposed would prove
mortal, Cuvilla was arrested, and was to
have beén exaniitied before Justice Barker
afternoon. We gather the above

Nevads for a doctor, and left immediately

Son cats eodsen did ,ood work in
extingaishing the fire yesterday morning.
To those who lived in the vicinity of the
fire, and were waiting for the hose carriages,. they. may have seemed long in
coming; yet scarcely five minutes elapsed
from the time the alarm was first sounded
until both companies were on the ground,
and had streams of water playing on the
tire. The buildings burned were surrounded on three sides by other wooden
structures, all as dry as tinder; yet 80
effective was the work that the progress of
the flames was stopped from the moment
the'firémen had their hose in position. The
firemen are deserving of credit fer their
promptness snd efficiency.

one oN pam that Mrs. Robinson }:

glk was doubtless the foundation of the
rumor, but as the facts were more fully
canvassed we believe it was generally, discredited. She ‘hal represented to every
other person with whom she had come: in
contact that she was poor, and’ had endeavored to pledge some. jewelry and othertrinkets for money,’ She had not received
any money, since. her.arrival in town,
either through the bank or, express office.
. The most reasonable conjecture. as_to_ the .
origin of the fire was that given by the witness Mary McAllister. The only candlestick the deceased had in the house was one
like those used by miners, and which had
been ‘stuck in the wall at the liead of ‘the
bed.. She had gone to sleep and
left w-tighted candle in’ the stick, » and when .
it burned down to the loop it dropped on
the floor and set it on fire. It is pretty
certain that the woman hadi been drinking
the evening before, and every circumstance
goes to show that the fire originated in the
manner indicated above, or by some other
accident.
The barn of: Prospect Savoy, who has a
wood and hay ranch on Rock Creek, below
the Blue Tent saw mill, was destrowed by
fire about four o’clock Sunday afternoon.
It appears that Savoy had built a fire to
heat, some wire, which he was using to bale
hay, and by some accident the fire communicated with the hay and straw about the
barn. He hadin the barn fifty sacks of

Prostrated by Heat.
George King, while engaged yesterday iorenoon in digging a grave atthe
Pine Grove cemetry, was prosteated by
the heat. He was found in an insensible ¢ondition, lying on the ground near
where he had been at work, and conveyed to the residence of Frack Nelson,
near by. Dr. Hunt was sent for and
adininistered restorativee,which seemed
to partially revive him. Yesterday
evening, he complained much of a paia
in the temple, and he eppeared wo have
no use of his. legs.
Hot Weather,
Yesterday was a scorching bot day,
the hottest we have'iad since the 2d
of July, just a month previous. From
one till three o’clock, the thermometers
hanging oo the north side of the buildings on Broad atfeet, ranged from 99
to 102 degrees.
