Grant, on the other hand, has insist6d on the gradual payment of the
principal of the national debt; and
the prompt payment of the interest.
‘this pohey strictly adhered to has
uceomplished wonders in bringing
gold down and in raising the value
of our currency.
Gradually, without unnecessary
burdens upon the people, without
prostrating business, we are approaching the period when our currency will be at par, our national
debt funded as so to be easily managed, and our taxes reduced to a
point that will excite no complaint.
‘ur great cities are particularly interested in keeping the affairs of the

which they live, cannot thrive under

Narrow Gauge Railroad
[his subject of narrow gauge railroads is beginning to attract that
attention in California that its importatice deserves. This system of
roads has been thoroughty tested in
the Eastern States, and has proved
a most undoubted success. In fact
it is the only feasible means of preventing, or at least holding in check,
the encroachments of grasping monopolies whose exactions bid fair to
enslavé the people of the country,
and hold then completely at the
merey of sdulless corporations.
In the adoption of this system, by
which the ownership and control of
thé roads is held by the people of
the various districts constructing
them, a fair tariff of rates for the
transportation of passengers and
freights is maintained, and the prosperity and growth of the covntry is
independent of the will and caprice
of corporation kings and monopoly
autocrats. Competition, which. is
suid to be the. life of trade, has a
healthy effect in every department of
the affairs of life, and in no other
cuse is this more fully demonstrated
than in the construction, management and control of the railroads of
the country.
In Nevada, Placer,;Solano, Yolo and
other counties of California, the people
‘pave fairly awak ned to the importanee of the constraction, within their
own borders, of narrow gauge roads
which shall be under their own contro}
and not subject to the arbitrary rule
of a few mowopolista who, if not
checked in their career, would reduce
the people of the catintry into a condition of actual serf-ship. In the
grain-growing districts of the valley
vdunities, roads are being “planned to
the nearest shipping porte upon the
navigable, waters. of the State, to
afford cheap transportation, the
présent rates of freight on the roads
of the monopolists being ruinous to
the interests of our agriculture.
Such a system of roads must prove
of the greatest benefit to the country,
and will greatly enhance the gr
of the property of the district
which they are located. ~
