LOCAL AFFAIRS. /Our Main street neighbor is‘getting ‘his back up, and begins -to show its teeth. In the Gazette of Tuesday evening # ‘calls ns an old granny, andin the same erticle begs-us for heaven’s Sake to keep quiet.” We are sorry to see that our neighbor is getting mad, but we can not help it. The Gazelle ought to xnow that calling us-hard names wont help it out ‘of a dirty scrape. It charged that A. A. Sargent employed Chinamen ‘to work his mining claims. We denied it emphatically under the authority of Geo. F. Jacobs, the superintendent of the mine. The Gazette, to maintain the charge, asserted that it could prove by a German that he, the. German, hid called at the mine to get employment and found ten Chinamen at work cleaning up the sluices, and that he was refused work. Mr. Jacobs authorized us to give the ie to this statement, which we did and demanded the ‘proof; In its issue of Tuesday evening, the Gazette offers as proof, that a man was traveling along the road with a German, who was carrying a pack; that the German applied for work at Mr. Sargent’s mine and was told they hal no work to give him. Now we ask the (Guzette whether it is not ashimed to offer such stuff in the way of proof to sustain its cltarge. Waat is his name? Where dves he live? To whom did he apply for. work? Was Was it to Mr. Geo. F, Jacobs? Who is the Gazette’s informant? What is his name? Where does he live? All these questions must be answered before the Gazette can get rid of the imputation thrown upon it by Geo. F. Jacobs, when he pronounced the whole story an unmitijated lie. alting tad and calling us ugly names, wont divert the attention af the people from tae position of the Gazetle. We want fucts, not abuse; dence to offer te sustain its charge, We demand that it shall produce it, being an unmitigated liar. We also demand proof of the charge made by that paper tb at John T. Morgan employed -Chinamen to work his mines. Qa this subject we want facts duly substantia ted by unimpeachable witnesses. We don’t want the (Gazelle to say @ certain tian told another man that another man told him that he had sa2n a man who knew @ man that suid John T. Morgan employed Chinainen to work his mines. ‘That sort of evidence wont do, The Guzette siid it never made charges against any man that it had not the evidence zt hand to sustain. Now we demaml the evidence to prove that Jobn T. Morgan employs Chinamen to work his mines. We also want tbe evidence to prove its libelous atieei on the superintendénts of mines. in this locality, in reference to their coercing their work-men to march in R2publican processious, We demand the proof of all these matters, or a retraction.
