Tue UNION ON THESITUATION.—The
pronounced the withdrawal letter of
Bidwell no «withdrawal. That noble
manly, independent journal, publishes
in one column Bidwell’s letter, in which
he declares he will not be a candidate
and urges his friends to support the
Union ticket, and in another says: “We
do not interpret his letter as a withdrawal.” Does the Union take Bidwell
fora fool? It certainly must, if it believes, as it pretends, that he was led
into.a false position by the friends of
Gorham. Bidwell has not only writteri
two or more letters declaring that he
would not, under any consideration, become @ candidate, but om Friday night
last he presided at a Gorham meeting
which was held at Chico. But the object of the Sacramento Union is not to
elect Bidwell. That paper has no respect for his ability, no faith in his honeaty, or it: would never attempt to place
him in the ‘position it does. If the
Union's position is true, and Bidwell
was deceived, as that paper charges, he . ¢X#mine
is one of the biggest fools in this State,
and if he does not mean what his language states, as the Union would have
But we believe that the paramount obUnion ticket, and to accomplish this
it is willing to use Bidwell as a tool.
‘The real object is the election of Haight.
