hOCAL ATEMS.Lecture on. Paris,
Rev. W. ‘H. Milburn lectured at the
‘Theates in this-sity on Tuceday evening o>
the s “What a Blind Man Saw in.
Paris.” “It had been given out that the .
lecture would be on Aarén Burr, but m:
‘haying éxpréssed a desire to hear the Jecture'on Paris, he put it to a vote of the auresulted in 75 voting for Parise and 65 for
Burr. Many did not vote, from the fact
that they knew nothing of the merits of the .
two lectures. After the question was decided; Mr. Milburn announced that he
should'remain here a, day longer than he
hadanticipated, and would . deliver the lecture on Burr the next evening. \We are
éold that the latter 1s Mr. Milburn’s best
lecture, but not having heard it at the time
thia Ge written we can not judge of its
merits. The lectare on Paris was a description of the various sights one might sce in
the course of a day's life in that.city,-with
sketches of the character of the various
nationalities whose representatives congregate there. He pronounced it the fincst
city the world had ever seen, far eclipsing
the splendors of Ninevah, of Babylon, of
Athens and. of Kome, in their day, and the
city in which civilization had attained its
highest perféction. But the speaker predicted that in consequence of the corruption.and atheiem that prevailed there, a terrible fate was awaiting the city. The earth“@lifices: and~ obliterate™ their}
civilization, is-only sleeping. and will do
18 work in God's qwa time.

The People of Grass Valley are complaining mach of the scarcity of water. The
pipes through the town are not always full,
and it is feared the mills will have to ran
short-handed for want of water. The wan;
of water at the mills means a want of water
for laboring men, and the Union suggests
that people generally should use water
more economically, and not allow any to be
wasted, This ia good advice, but it 1s difficult the extreme to induce a whole
community, who obtain their supply. of
water through the same pipes, to be econ-omitalin ite use. The cost is about the
‘aame for each family, whether they uze
much or little, and each one thinks what
little he wastes will not be felt, A water
meter, to show the exact amount drawn
from each hydrant, would effvet the desired result. There isa chance for some
one to make a furtune by inventing sucl.a.

The Shooting at hou set,
Captain Cuvilla, who shot Tim Scantlin
at You Bet on Tuesday, waived an examination, and was held to bail in the sum of
$1,500. ‘The case, we presume, will be investigated by the Grand Jury now in session. Scantlin was alive yesterday mora-;—
ing, but there was no hope of his recovery.
The ball entered just above the breast bone,
cut into the wind pipe, and.came out under
the right arm. Dr. Hunt, who went up to
attend him, says the cavity of the lung is
filled witht blood, and that it is not probable
he can live more than i day or two.
