Jonathan Clark. ~ PRELIMINARY TRiaL.—Ia consequence ‘of the bet made on Wednesday, viz., that ‘could pull a sack of sand weighing five hun‘dred pounds, at the end of in inch ropethree last Friday evening. CHANGE OF PosTMASTEKS.—An appointPost Master, to take the place so well occupied by E. F. Bean, Esq., during the lust four years. Major Bean is succeeded by F. Guild. We undertake to say, without tne fear of successful contradiction, that Bean is one of the very best postinsters appointed ‘by the late President Lincoln. So well was vho liked in that capacity, that the people of this place, on héating last winter that an effort was being made to revove him, got up & rémonstrance which, with but three or four exceptions, wassigned by all the businessmen ofthe place This remonstrance wee forwatded to Congressman Higby, and ne One thought it possible where there was suoh unanimity in favor of retaining a postmaster, that he would be turned out against the wishes of forty-nine out of fifty of the eatire population.
