Of the ‘Union uten, who: have been persecuted, oppressed and ignored for the last few
“years.” Such seems to be the only tational
‘action of the friends of Johnson duriug the
‘past few mouths. Their whole object seems
td be to forin an alliance with the rebel element ef the Seuth, in order to gain sufficient
strength tu enter the next Presidential contest’ with some ‘show of success. For the
accomplishment of this. purpose, they are
willing to place the loyal mén of the South
under the yoke of the:unrepentant traitors,
Loyalty is the price, and the Philadelphia
Convention is the bagaar in Which it is to be
bartered by Johosunites fur rebel support.
Yor the aecumplishment of this purpose we
find Johnasun, Doolittle and Seward, meeting with Vallandigham, Pendleten—and
Stephens; men who buve always professed’
the greatest loyalty with the basest traitors
of the land; men who would have starved
Union soldiers by réfusing to vote supplies;
mou who would have delivered the country
buund into the hands of traitors. by refusing
‘total out troops in the nation’s defense;
mea who violated their owths to support:the:
Constitution, and who now stand before
the world as perjured traitors, are the men
to whom Johnson is now \louking fur support. Stephens tells us that bis opinions in
regard to secession are nut changed, and in
the next breath he indorses President Johnson. Thg greatest support uf Johnson in his
present course came from copperheads and
rebels, and in the Connecticut election,
with all the power of his patronage, with all .
the contemptible tricks with-which he-deseorated the high place he unworthily ‘tills,
he was unable to add a thousand votes to
the copperhead strength, and so it has-been
in every election, huld in the loyal States,
since he weut inte.the ranks of the cop:
perheads. The unpiincipled men who control the Johnson party are attempting to
hide their real designs, and are using the
names ofsuch men as Cole for delegates.—
They are attempting to cloak their nefarious
purposes uoder the garb of loyalty, but it
willoot wia. The welfare and security of
loyal men of the South and the security of
the country are all to be sacrificed upon the {
witar of Johoson's unholy ambition. Fortunate to the new party, Vallundigham ‘und
neat are taking a leading part in mupulating the Convention, and we hopethey

thatin the study of geography, special at‘tention should be paid to the country where
the student lives, without neglecting te vb*

That is one of the things this book proposes. Although disclaimed to bea clyclo. pedia, itis excellent as-a book of reference
as wellas study, for those who have not .access to larger works. . That errors may be
found in descriptions of localities and statrstical statements, is likely. It is impossin
ole to avoid them anywhere, when relating
to particulars and out uf the way portions
of the country, aud the difficulty is vastly
increased in a country so new and subject to
constant change as this. It would be well
where such errors are found, to inform, if
possible, the publishers, that they might
make corrections in subsequent editions.—
Another advantage claimed in its arrangement—but 'the editor claims that its chief

A REMARKABLE discovery of great interest to the antiquarybas been made
sedeon by Mr, Parker, one of the tounders
of the British Antiquarian Association ie
Rome. He was groping about the riverside opposite the Cloaca Maxima, accumpanying his phutographist in search of a good
view of the Clouca, when he almost ran
against three large stone corbela projecting
had holes in them, evidently for. receiving
large chains, and their facings are carved in
the form of lions’ heads. of Etruscan character. They were probably (says Mr. Parker) made in the time of Camillus after the
taking of Veii, and were evidently removed
at a later date, having been probably replaced by Sy lla, who constructed extensive
works on the Tiber.

WATCHE 8!
_-FOR BALK, BY
W. C. RANDOLPH,
Nevada, Aug. 2.
REASONS WHY THE
AMERICAN WATCH
Made at WALTHAM, MASS,
Is THE BEST.
It is made on the best principle, . Its frame is
composed of SULAD PLATES. . NO jar can interfere with the harmony of its werkiuy and no
sudden shock can damage its machinery. Kvery
piece is made and finished by machinery (itself
fumous for its noveity, as well as for its effiectiveness)-and is therefore properly made. The
watch is what a.) mechanism should be—ACCURA'TS, SIMPLE, STRONG AND EUON.OMICAL, Except some high grades, too costly
fur general use, foreigo watches are chiefly
made by women and boys, Such watches are
composed of severe) bundred pieces screwed
and riveted together, and require constant repairs tokeep them in any kind of ouder. All
persons who have carried *‘ancres,” “lepines”’
und **Mnglieh Latent Levers,” are perfectiy well
aware of the truth of this statement. At the beginning of our enterprise, more
than ten years ayo, it was our first object to
make @ thoroughly good low-priced watch for
the million, te take the place of these foreign
impositions—the refuse of ‘foreign factorivea—
which were entirely unsaleable at home and
perfectly worthless every where.
How well we have accoinplished this may be
understood from the fact, thai after 80 many
years Of public trial, we now make MOKK
THAN HALF OF ALL THE WATCHES
SOLD IN THE UNITED STATES, and tha
no others have ever given such usilversalsatiofaction. While this department,of our business
is continued with increased faci) ities for perfect
work, we are at present engageu in the manufacture of watches of the very MIGHEST
GRADE KNOWN ‘TO CHRONOMETRY, unequalled by anything hitherto mad by ouracives
