LOCAL AF FAIRS.
House DesTroyev.—On Saturday night
the residence of James Findley on Main
street, a few doors ubove the California
Stage Co's. stables, caught on fire, it is supposed, from the sparks of a pile of rubbish
which was burned in the afternoon. “Two
children were. in the house at the time and
the back part of the building was enveloped
in flaines before the alarm was sounded.—
The luculity is the mosf difficult in the city
for the fire companies to reach. Both compauirs were out promptly, and the Nevada
« was‘lwanted by a hundred men who went up
the heavy grade at full speed. Several hun: . dred fevt of-hose were: required to_ reach
the fire, but the beys soon got_the~ conuectron complete and commenced work. The
Pennusyivania reached the play at the school
house in good time, but after running out
four hundred feet of hose could not get
nearer than Witbin three hundred feet of the
fire. Few thought when the fire was discovered that it would be stayed until the
entire row of buildings had been consumed
and the flames had found nothing. more in
their way, but thanks to the firemen aud
the double row of trees which contributed
greatly to prevent. the spread of the flames
the fire did uot reach beyond Find ley’s house.
There was'no wind at the time of the fire.
‘Lhe loss is about $1,500.
MusTerep In.—Brigadier General How.
ell.and Assistant Adjutant General Pomeroy,
mustered the Nevada Light Guard into the
National Guard last evening. The soldiers
had a jolly time at -the Armory after the
business was completed. The Brigade
offigers go to You Bet this evening for the
purpose of mustering the Little York Union
Guard into service. To-morrow evening
they expect to muster in the Camptonville
company which will about complete the
work in the Fourth Brigade.
ELECTION OF CHiEF.—The time four the
election of Chief Engineer of the Fire
Department passed without any action
having been taken by the Board of Delegates, whose duty it was to call an election
on the second Tuesday in July. By virtue
of law Chief Schmidtburg holds uutil his
successor is elected and qualified. The
matter will come up before the Board of
Delegates at their next meeting.STEVE. VENAuD.—Harper's Weekly, for
‘duly 14th, contains an excellent likeness of
Steve Venard, with a full account of the
capture of the San Juan stage robbers. The
picture of the scene of the killing is purely
imaginary, but the description of the event
is correct. Crawford has this and all-other
periodicals received by the last steamer.
GuizzLy Caprurep.—steve Venard and
his Henry rifle have again been heard from,
Last week, in company with Frank Fisher
and Stephens, he succeeded in capturing a
huge grizzly bear, about five miles north of
Meadow Luke. “Stephens fired, when the
bear made for him, but Steve and his companions succeeded in bringing him to the
ground before be advanced any distance.
NATURALIZATION.—The County Court
will meet on Saturday for the purpose of
hearing aplications for admission to citizenship. All whe want to be naturalized
should take notice and be on hand. As
there is very little business to come before
the Court the term will end next week.
