' Qn Saturday night.a round packace containing powder and matchee,saturated with kerosene, was found in the teat of John Jack’s place, on Pinel street, Avotber one of different shape, but composed of the same inflammable articles, was found on F. OC. Luetje’s building, and another in the rear of Al-x. Gault’s store and residence, on Broad atreet. They had been thrown on the tops of the buildings, did tae wiscreant who did it, anticipated they would ignite and, set fire tothe buildings, but fortustarted at these places, especially in the night time, we should this morning have been called upon to record, (if our office hud been saved,) « terrible conflagration, Where the attempt was made to des'roy the town, a better place to eusare ite success gould not have been selected. The above named buildings adjoin Chinatown, where the bouses are as thick as they can be, and are made <f the moet inflummuble materiuls,aad a fie once startel there, it would hive . ’ been almost an utter im possibility to exting ish it, and the town would necessarily been des‘troyed. -It was the most devilish attempt to lay our city in ashes that we ever heard of. The leading citizens vonsulted together yesterday morning and decided immediately to call the people together at Huni's Hall last eveuing for :he~purpose of Committee of Safety, It is expected that every good citizen will fall into the ranke.and help rid the town of all lawless men who may be found “around here. The people mean. business, and will not be slow in bringing down upon the heads of these weeiches the retributive justice that they deserve. Several. hundred handbilis were circulated all over the city, which read as follows: WARNING! That Ohimaman, Constable Juke Cross arrived here on Saturday, with the Chinaman who stole the money from Mrs. T. ©. Plankéett, at Truckee, a few days ago. The Grand Jury wi'l take the matter in hand. The Chioaman is said to be a very intelligent rascal and threatens to make some startling @Xposures about the theft of the $960. He asserts thet other Chinamen stole the money, and told him where they buried it, and he went and dug it up for Cross.
