NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA,
“LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
KEEP YOUR PREMISES CLEA¥.—Revised Ordinance No,,5, section 3, ‘rex
quires all persons, owners or occupants
of property within the city limite, to
dispose of in a manner not to‘interfere .
with the health or comfort of ‘citizens,
decayed animal or vegetable matter,
standing pools,and every detriment to
public health. Those who neglect this
are liable to a fine of not less than $10
nor more than $50. In many localities
the vacant lots between buildings-are . .
made receptacles for all the villainous
compounds capable of being compounded by the refuse from buildings. In
China street especially, an enforcément
of this ordinance would be conducive to
___ public health and comfort, A man who
can: pass through that locality without
closing his nostrils, must be incapable
of smelling. Some other localities are
but little in advance of Chinatown in
_ this respect, and the same may be said
of some of the open lots which have
been used.as depositaries for the waste
from the street. If Ordinance No. 5
were strictly enforced, ‘we are certain
that it would benefit the health, and
certainly it would enhance the comfort
of citizens. Let it be enforced. —
Catn’s Surcrbe—A dispatch from
Carlin, in speaking of the death of Geo.
W. Cain, who left this city on Wednes,
day last, says: “Geo. W. Cain was
_ arrested here Thursday, on a telegraph
dispatch from Nevada, alleging that he
was leaving the State in debt to. parties in that city. In the afternoon he
gave thosé who had him in charge, the
slip, and it was supposed he had gone
east on a freight train. Tosday, his
clothes, money and watch were found
on the-bank of the river, together with
a letter, stating that he was tired of
life, and was going to drown himself.
The Indians commenced searching in
the river, and his body was found some
200 yards below where he went in, lying
on the bottom. The Coroner is nuw
holding an inquest.” Cain started in
business here a short time ago, and became involved. He could easily have
settled with all his creditors, the aggre~
gate of whose claims did not amount
“to $500, but he had not the moraiy
courage to tell his troubles. He went
away and when arrested suppesed that
he would be brought back to Nevada,
and his tragic end shows that he preferred to meot death to coming among
his acquaintances in disgrace.
Tae Burns’ Process.—We under* stand that the furnace at Meadow Lake,
erected for the purpose of testing the
Burns’ process, is about completed, and
that work will commence upon the
rock om next Monday morning. The
rock, we believe, is first roasted and
then subjected to the action of a fluid
which deatfoys the sulphur. The process, used on a small scale, has proved
good, and it only remains to test it in
the working of large quantities of ore.
The great difficulty in Meadow Lake
has been the refractoryature of the
ores, ahd should the new process prove
to. be what experiments on a small
scale indicate, Meadow Lake will soan
become a lively place.
