rested Bill Congleton, on Friday last, charg_ ‘ed with assault and beating a woman. He
was convicted and sentenced to pny a fie’)

, twenty-five days. He went to jail.
PF Jameg Siiiler was arrested on Fri

bythe former in two straight heats.

Eastern News Meacer.—From the
seat of war there is little of importonce._. The.returns show that the majerity for
Bramlette in Keutacky is so far 16.000. _
~ Bion Bradberry is ‘again nominated for
Gov. of Maine by the copperheads. He has
‘been the standing candidate for years. He
‘has been the rum candidate, and it is fitting
_, that he become the cundidate—of—the—rum=-+
sucking secessiquists.
Jeff Davis complains of dismal times and
want of alacrity in coming forward to assist
the Confederacy. The Richwoud Examiner
__talks gloomily about Charleston, and stys its
~ Toss will seal the fate of the Confederacy.
The capture of Mobile is confidently expected at Washington. It is thought Charleston
is bound tu be-tuken. All wre confident who
are engaged mi the sege. The army and
navy work haruwuivusly together. The
heaviest guns ever cast in the North are
about to operate on Sumter: and it is pre~
dicted they will do the work of reducing that
fort in afew hours. Fuailure at Charleston
is not thought of. f
Letters captured in Mississippi confirm
Buchanan's treason. The Herald says a
large nasal force. is to be sent to the Pacifie
coast. Doubtful. The claims against New
York City for damages eustained by rivt~
ers is $950,000. Gold is 1264.
THE condition of the Soathern Faitronds is
thus described by one wnter who traveled
from Richmond to Charlesten in May :—
“Trains on the railways of the South move
now slowly. The tracks are very much worn
and unea'e fur travelling at high speed. The
locomnmtives; passenger r-cara, freight trucks,
are all inere or less dilapidated. This fact
constitutes a grave. tisuieiaina to the Cons
federacy. not only. in ite bearing on the eoncentration of masses of mep at a given point
with rapidity, but alse in reference to trats+
portation for their necessary supplies.”

' A Hervw.—At th: bitle of Gettysburg,
Corporal Hayden, of the first M nuesota; .
was taken prisoner by the rebela—managed
to escape, seized a musket. and wetually
made ten rebels surrender. While marching
them to General Gibbon's quarters, a revel
behind atree drew a bead on him with his rifle. Hayden saw him in tire to bring his
iece toa level and ery out “surrender.”
e fellow agtually threw. down hia gun and
joined. the procession, and Hayden came in
with eleven captives. :
