LOCAL AFFAIBS,
Country FPuraxces.—Nevada county is
to-day in a better financial condition than
any other county in the State, and we doubt
if there is any county in the United States
ean show a.much better record. Several
years since a heavy debt hung over us; our
mines were deserted by out miners for dis‘ taint districts and it Was predicted that the
county would be depopulated. This was
the condition of things four ,yearé ago.
At the dullest time the great fire came destroying ‘thé Zounty buildings,-‘which had
beeu built at immense cost,
that tine the best Court House and jail in
the State has been built and peid for, and
the county is almest out of debt. The
Treasurer to-day advertises that he will pay
all scrip drawn upon the General Fund up
to May 31. Scrip is worth 99 cents on the
dollar, and io three months the county af.
fairs will be carried on upon a cash basis,’
Next year the only taxes which need be levied is envugh to pny the current expenses,
and besides having a county in the healthiest
financial cundition, we willhave the lightes!
taxes of any county in the State. The imwense debt paid within four years; the new
buildings erected aud paid for, are the best
evidences of the prosperity of the county.
and the excelleuce of the wives,to which
Nevada county owes all. The expenses of
this county have been very heavy, and on.
acceunt of losses by fire more.perhaps than
must other counties. Therefore the health.
ful state of finances can only be accounted
for where the rapid progress of the development uf our mives is known.
BREAKING Drrcnes.—We quoted an
item frou the Muuntain Messenger yesterday, in relation to, the buruing of tue Magenta Flume, which was incorrect in several particulara, This flume was not burned.

then fired the lumber which had been
pluced upon the ground for repairs. We
warn from a gentleman from the ridge, that
there was no water in the ditch night before last, and it wae supposed the ditch had
been again broken. The Magenta ‘flume is
18 inches deep, six feet wide and 150 feet
above the ground.
Guess Not.—The Grass Valley Union
states that Ruby & Co., of the Crampton
Theatrical Troupe, swindled‘all the printing
offices where they had any printing done ia
this part of the country. Guess not, Mr.
Union, we did cunsiderable printing for
thatoencern, and they did'nt get une cent
whedd of us.
Grass Vatcey Items,—From the Union we learn that 8. D. Leavitt was re-elected Chief of the Fire Departmeat on Mon.

for a whole day..The house of Mr. Mills,
corser of Schou] and Walsh streets, was
entered on Monday and $7 stolen. In a
bureau drawer was $300, which the thief
did not finds 2.
Tue Opena.—The Howson Opera Troupe
which is expected to visit thie city soon, are
now performing at Sacramento, where they
have made quite a bit. The Union says
the members “have excellent voices and are
equal to their undertakings.” Such a
troupe ‘as this can always rely upon a govd
support in Nevada.
Social Party.—Mr. & Mrs. Fogeli, “f
will give a Social Party on the evening of
the 15th iastant. Tickets including supper,
$250. Goed music will be furvished and
& general invitation is extended.

GoINe To Sea IN-A Bows.—Recently
Captain John M. Hudson and Cuptain J. E.
Fitch set sail in a very small boat from New
York fur London. ‘The vessel is a full
Tigged ship, four tons burdén, five feet
beam, aod twenty-three feet long. She was

REASONS WHY THE
AMERICAN WATCH
Made at WALTHAM, MASS,
Is THK BEST,
It ia made on the best principle. Its frame is
composed of SULLD PLATKS. -NO jar can interlere with the harmony of its werkiny and no
sudden shock can damaye ite machinery. Kvery
piece is made and finished by machinery (itself
famous for its noveity, as Well as for ite effiectiveness) and is theretore properly made. ‘Ihe

awareof (he truth of: thie statement.
At the beginuing of our enterprise, , more
than ten years ayo, it was our firrt object to
make @thoroughiy good low-pricea watch for
the million, tu take the place of ‘these foreign
impositions—the refuse of foreign factories—
which were entirely unsaleable at home and
perfectly worthless every where.
How well we have accomplished this’ may be
understood from the fact, that after so many
years of public trial, we now make MOREL
THAN HALF OF ALL THE WATCHES
SOLD IN THE UNITKD STATES, and that
no others have ever given such universal satisfaction. While this department of our business
is continued with increased facilities for perfect,
work, we are at present engaged m the madiufacture of watches of the very HIGHEST
GRADE KNOWN TO CHRONOMETKY, unequalled by anything hitherto mad by ourselves
and unsurpassed by anything made in the
world” For this purpose we have the amplest
facilities. We have erected an addition to our
main buildings expressly for this branch of our
business, and have filled it with the best workmen in our s®Pvice. Mew machines and applianees have been constructed, which pertorm : ‘
their work with consummate delicacy and exactneas. The choicest and most approved mate
rials only are used and we challenge comparison
between this grade of our work and the finest
imporied chronometers. We do not pretend to
sell our watches for less money than foreign
watches, but we do assert'without tear of con-tradiciion that for theo woney our product
is incomparably supgor. All our watches, of
whatever gi are fully warranted and this
