The Supervisors of Placer county have made an appropriation of $1,000 to make an exhibit at the State Fair. In Arizona and sew Mexico the rainy season has begun and general railroad wrecks and washouts are reported. During a trip from Portland to As‘toria Tuesday night a $10,000 package was taken from the Pacific Express. Company. Government officials have ordéred Jesse D. Jenkins & Crewell’s slaughter house, in the outskirts of Marysville, was burned Thursday. The loss wil reach several thousand dollars. No live stock was lost. His musical career was hindered by his boyish fancy. for the illusions of magic, at first a mere recreation, afterward an infatuation. While still a stucompany with another young and noted artist, and at the Theatre Royal, Rochester, he gave his first magical entertainment. : The result was not brilliant. The friendly confederate sat in a front box, with greatly waxed mustache, eyeglass and other disguise, but owing to anxiety periods, to the discomfiture of the wizard and the disgust of the audience, from whose missiles the two young adventurers escaped through a window at the rear of the stage. : In 1852, ‘Robert Heller” came to the United States, and soon afterwards he drifted to Washington. There he became a professer of music, was organist at Dr. Hall's church, became a lion in the diplomatic society presided over by Lord and Lady Napier, and married Miss Annie Kieckhofer, a daughter of one of the firm of Riggs & Co., bankers. But his infatuation: for a. Bohemian life was not overecdme. His marriage was not a happy one, and he persuaded an old English gentleman named Philp, the father of a“Washington bookseller, to furnish the funds for a new necromancer’s outfit. Soon afterwards he obtained the services of his step. sister, Miss Ada Palmer, as a confederate, and with her travelled around the. world, Returning to the Atlantic coast he died Bigg gS aiee Brag Philadelphia, Nov, 27, 1878,— ton Budget. . eee eee A Rich Western City. “Probably the richest city for its size in . the world is Cheyenne City, Wyoming, the home of the cattle kings,” said Charles Jennings, a huge-sized Western man from that territory at the Union . I know of at least $5,000,000 and there may be a great deal more I know nothing of. ‘The Swan Land and Cattle Company's ° paid in capital is £750,000, and there is the Powder River Cattle Company—with~ capital stock of $1,500,000, the Duke of Manchester being the chairman of the company.” ‘* How about other kinds of business ?”” ‘Do you know, it seems to me there is not ® poor person in the whole town, If there is, there are but few. “There is about as much invested in other kinds of business as there is in cattleraising, thus making a town of 5,000 inhabitants worth $65,000,000, and where can you find another city of that size in the world so wealthy? “The town has all the modern improvements, such as electric light, theatres, the same as large cities. “ Good-by, stranger. When Mr. Lincoln, then President-elect, passed through Rochester, in Febru ry, 1861, en route to Washington, his face was smoothshaven. It is said that on his way from Ilinois to Washington a little girl remarked to him : tion of a $70,000 public building at AlJentown, Pa. It was introduced, referred to the Building Committee, re‘ ported and passed-all inside of fifteen minutes. e Ben Dutton, afarm hand, went to the house of John Lamont, three miles east of Dayden, N. Y., on Monday night, and attempted to kill Lamontand Miss Roab, a young woman employed in their household. He fired one bullet at Lamont, which took effect in the face, and four at the girl, all of which took effect. Her most serious injury isa wound in the back ofthe head, and her recovery is doubtful. He was in love with the girl, who had discarded him. When They Leave Us, The exodus of our bodily troubles is doubly welcome if their departure is unaccompanied by pain. It is the fault of the best of commerdable eathartics, which act solely upon the bowels, that in operating they gripe arid weakens these organs. Hostetters’s Stomach Bitters produces a laxative effect, put neither causes pain nor weaken the abdominal region or the stomach. This is pre-eminently the alterative which a constipated, bilious or dyspeptic person should use, since a resort to it involves no bodily discomfort nor produces a violent reaction. The liver is aroused, the stomach benefitted, and the habit of body speedily and permanently improved by it. Fever and ague, rheumatism aud kidney troubles are among the maladies for which recorded experience has proved it to be efficacious. It is a wholesome appetizer, and a far mere rellable tranquillizer of the nerves than stomach-disturbing ‘Mr. Lincoln, your face would not seem so long and you would look better if you wore whiskers.” The President laughed, thanked the young miss, and went his way.
