Hastening tothe museum he found the managers anda number of stage workmen battling with the. little elephant, which had seized the lion with its trunk by the hind leg, and was tugging; to pull the beast out through the bars of the cage. The roars of the lion aroused all the other animals, and their cries added to the confusion. Twice the men succeeded in treaking the hold of the elephant, which then, maddened by scratches and bites of the lion, strove to. break down the strong cage in which its enemy was confined, and twice the elephant renewed its hold. Finally the man, reinforced by other workers in the museum, succeededinbinding the little elephant with ropes and chains, and securing him at a place far removed from the lion. . It was found that the lion’s leg was badly wrenched. The elephant escaped with unimportant scratches and bites in its hearings were had before you as 17. North, Range 9 East,M. D. M.,Sacramento, California, Land District, that these lands are situated in a rich mineral belt in the great mining county of Nevada; that at their hearings the Central Pacific Railroad Company offered evidence tending to show the agricultural character of such of the lands as were not claimed to be mineral in character, that mineral claimants were present and ready to prove the mineral character of the lands they claimed; that no evidence was presented by them or said company, as to their lands, said company promising by its attorneys, after openly admitting the mineral character of these lands, to strike the same from: its list, and that it would not include, them in any application for pat. ent; that you understood that said company did include these last mentioned lands in its lists and now asks patent therefor; and that in view of the foregoing, and the manifest wrong and injustice of the said company’s action in the particular specified, you protest against the issuance of patents to said company for any of said last mentioned lands, and that you stand ready to furnish affidavits to the truth of your statement. In answer you are advised that the records pertaining to said hearings, twoin number, had at the instance of said company, were transmitted to this office by the local office under date December 17th last, and List No. 12 of said company’s selections, under date 18th ultimo, said record and list corroborate your statements, except that they do-not-show the character of the lands last mentioned, nor why no evidence was offered concerning them. The object of this movement is not publicly stated, bnt the supposition is that the people of that section propose to organize for protection against the presence of the anti-mining sneaks who have for a long time infested the community, and also against the ravages .of sheep and cattle that are driven from the valleys every summer and clean out all the feed so that stock owned there has to be taken to remote ranges to prevent it from starving.
