city a few years ago. Now it does
not seem to make much difference.
In early times we depended almost
wholly upon hydraulic mines. Now
we depend partly upon quartz mines
which can be worked successfully
regardless of the Storm King.

Chinatown is increasing in population. There will not be another
election for two years so there is no
danger of an agitation on that subject till that, time.

Several tine offers have been made
for fire proof brick buildings in this
city during the past few days, and
all of-them, so far as we have heard,
have been refused. Owners of property here do not seem to care about
selling even at an advance on what
they asked a few months ago.
The Methodist Church Society is
making arrangements to have the
church edifice painted, mside and
outside. We hope our Episcopal!
friends will do likewise. To tell the
truth and be plain, we are a little
ashamed of the unpainted structures
which are owned by these societies.

A Good Educator.
The Board of Educgtion of this
city displayed excellent judgment in
selecting W. A. Cowdery as Principal of the High School. jhe scholars in that department (and they are
the most reliable authority that we
know of when it comes to a question
of the kind) are more genérally satisfied with him than with any one
heretofore occupying the © position.
His methods of imparting instruction are practical and thorcughly
effective. The vicious and unwarranted attacks made upon his character
from certain quacters have merely
tended to strengthen his popularity
with the pupils and patrons of our
public schools, and it is to be hoped
that the Board of Education will,
in their wisdom, subserve the best
binterests of our educational system
by prevailing upon him to retain the
position he now so ably fills.
