NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA.
LOCAL
THE OPENING —The opening
ball, given. by Messrs. Lancaster. and
~.Hasey, of the Nationa) Exchange ‘Hotel, in this city, on Tuesday night, was
a grand success: There were about
fifty couples _ present, representing the
beauty and elite of the county. Noet-—
withstanding the recent heavy sterm
representatives were present from San
Juan, Rough & Ready/You Bet ani
other towns of the nty. A large
number were no doubt prevented from
attending’ by the inclement weather.
The masic was the best that could be
“obtained in the county, and this. is
equivalent to saying it could not be
beaten. The floor was in excellent
condition, and\with the calling of Mr.
Dickinson the egmpany could not help
enjoying the dan The large dining
hall when thrown Open to the guests,
« presented a beautiful appearance, The
tables, elegantly decorated with flowers, and loaded down with good things,
would have excited an appetite in a
dyspetic. We have never seen tables
more profusely supplied with good
things or more handsomely ‘decorated
than on this occasion. The guests
showed their appreciation by heartily
partaking of this excellent supper, and
‘with one accord pronounced it “most
excellent.” Messrs. Lancaster & Hasey
may well feel proud in the assurance
that those who attended. the opening
bull were so well pleased. The dance
continued as pleasantly after supper as
before, and at a late hour the guests retired, fully satisfied with their: enjoy-ment, and only regreting that a larger
number were not out'to participate in
tle pleasure.
LIGENCE.
THE CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.—Not
long since the Grass Valley Union
naming four marksmen of Pleasant
Valley, offered to back them ina contest with any four of Nevada. We are
authorized by the Nevada boys to ac_cept the challenge, and the proposition
-mnay be considered open for two weeks,
The weapons to be used are rifles with
globe sights. The distance to be from
sixty to seventy rods, and the shooting
to be done upon strange ground—say
at Newtown, half way between the two
places. The stakes to be any amount
from $250 to $1,000. If the Pleasant
Valley boys win in this contest, the
Nevada men will give them another
chance, staking Palmer’s quartz mill
against the Grass Valley Union office.
Bring vp your men Mr. Union, or ac~
knowledge that we have the best rifle
shooters in the county.
DANCING ScHoo.—Dickinson’s Quadrille Class, composed of ladies and gentlemen, will meet at the National Hall,
in this city, to-morrow evening. Mr.
Dickinson has a number of new quadFilles which he will teach all who attend. On Friday evering arrange
ments will be made and time fixed for
~ thé meeting of classes for the Fancy
Dances, ete. Mr. Dickinson is an excellent teacher, and he always succeeds
in making his schvols pleasant.
E.uis Epwarps.—A gentleman of
this city received a letter from Sacra~
mento stating that Ellis Edwards, of
Meadow Lake, has been appointed clerk
to the Sergeant-at-Arms of the Senate,
with a salary of $8 per day, The friends
of Mr. Edwards in this locality will be
glad to hear of his good fortune, as he
is worthy of the place, and thoroughly
competent for the performance of its
duties.

A. Ragsdale’s Vegetable Preparation?
or infallible remedy for Diptheria and
