Went over to their cabin to dinner, . feet from the residence of Mr Mills reading that gentleman out of their association. He had belonged to it . for ten years, andduring all that time i been. considered one of the shining; lights on acecunt of his professed . aversion for the fairsex. Itiwow appears however that he has for several years past been sailing under false . colors—siyly contemplating a matrimonial venture that a few weeks! since culmiaated in his marriage with M.ss Mary Warner of Grass Valiey. . The object of Thursday eveniny’s . meeting was to. expel the dere.act idividaal from the Club: whose cardinal teachings are to the effect that } it is not well to marry. ‘The ceremonies attendant upon the occasion were of an imposing character, and calculated to impress upon the still . faithful the tryimg ordeal through Whichall apostates must pass. The proceedings of this ‘‘avenging circle” aré always conilucted in a secret manner, none of the outside worli excepting the victim and his near relatives being permitted te Witness them. After the regular exercises the visitors were invited to partake of ‘a collation the preparation of which did infinite credit to the hostess. After a pleasant hour at she table, all returned to the parlor and: spent sofne time i Various enjoyable pastimes. Just previous to their departure, Mr. Fleming conducted his ex-brethers to a private apartment and there displayed to them an indi. . cation of his yobd intention, the nature of which the members say they ire not at liberty to divulye to the peuvral-public, After wishing the happy couple many years of coutinued prosperity and joy, the assemblage dispersed, admitting that the hospitabie mianner in which they had been entertained well nigh comvensated tor the pain experignceéd in frees froin their’ ranks ohe* of the Litherto leading retainers, The World's & rauary. Till the comparison is made in fig: ures it is not easy to appreciate how completely the United States overshadows England ani the rest’of the civilized world in its food-producing power. England hag 2,890, . ) acres ot wheat this year, and Australia suppements this with 2,500,000 acres. With the exception of Canada, these twe eouutries ' doijtain al. the wheat tilled by the Englishspeaking race. The United + tates has the rest—33,000,000 acres anid over. All Europe, including Russia has barely 40,L00,C 00, at a rough estimate based on the wheat production of the different countres, ‘he United States alone has nearly as ‘large an acreage, and at the annual rate of increase will soon have more. On the lattep date an adjournment will be had till tie Sist ‘instant, when it will convene for the purpose of disposing of any matters that-may perchance come upin the meantime. ‘The closing day of the year will witness the tinale of its existence as one of the things of the State, and the Superior Court; with Judge Caldwell at, its head, will hereafter mete out justice to the peop e of this District. When doctors disagree, to what source shall the afilicted flee for relief? The present Attorney General says that all county officers assume their togas in March, while the At torney General elect opines that the transformation takes place on the Ist proximo. The new Constitution has mixed things up so all over the State that nine-tenths of the peo; le at large don’t feel satisfied as to which end they stand on. oe Coming Down to Trade, A large number of the people who live up country are taking advantage of the present fine weather to come to Nevada City and lay in their stocks of Christmas presen‘s. The prices of our dealers are very low this season, there being a redugtion in many lines of goods. By consulting the advertising columns of the TRaNscripr, ‘he reader will find alist of those firms that-oiler the best inducements. AO ee The Big Lumber Suit, A San Franciseo dispatch of Thursday gives the fo lowing particulars regarding the trial of the case of Seth Martin and D. W. Leach ys. Oliver Lonkey and FE. R. Smith, which has.gecupied a jury in the United States Court since Wednesday of last week, and will not likely be concluded for several days to come: Plaintiffs were partners in the ownership ofthe Banner Saw = Mill, near Truckee, Nevada county. In 1375 they midé a written agreement with the defendants to furtiish them with some five million feet of luniber. This action was brought to recover some: $60,000 damages for a non-performance of the contract on the part of the defendants, It is elaimed by plaintiffs that the defendants threw obstacles in their way which prevented them from fulli ling the. coutract, by depriving them of the use of a certain dam trom which they tloated logs down to their mill, while the defense is that the ‘plaintiffs ‘had voluntarily notified the defendants that they had surrendered the contract. A great deal of evidence has been taken in reference to ‘the lumber delivered to plaintiffs not being merchantable, but that the agent of the defendants counted it and set it aside as merchantable, which the defense aver he was not authorized to do, or, in other words, that he was not authorized to accept the same, only to tally it. Itis also clainved by plaintiffs ‘that the defendants sold them a halt interest in a ranch anda water right, which enabled ‘hem to floxt logs through a flume they constructed to their mill, but that the defendants connived with another party to tile a pre-emption on the land, who in turn sold onehalf to plaintiffs. esa SE Just from Leadville, Officer Scott met two well dressed strangers on the street late the other night, and engaged in a conversation with them, They told him they had just come over from Leadville. “What kind of a placé is it ?” ask. ed the officer, “Well,” responded one of them, “it’s the infernalest spot on the face of the earth. The atmosphere contains three per cent. of lead. Pneumonia’s raging. There are eight grave diggers at work all the tinie, and every man that can’t get something else to do, goes to making coffins. If a fellow stays there long enough, he is sure to die.” Mr, Scott expresses no donbt as to the truth of the last sentence, but ed that good enough prospects have been obtained to justify all this. i » he) thinks the rest of the yarn was exaggerated a httle, Considerable i ii Best Cal.
