“LOCAL AFFAIRS.
The Orleans Flat Tragedy--Kleese
Discharged. at
After the killing of Pryorat Orleans
Flat, on Thursday morning, James
Kleese, who did the shooting, went
to Eureka and surrendered himself to
Justice Ballard and the case was investigated. We are informed that
testimony showed that Pryor, the deceased, after accusing Kleese of slan. ‘
followed him for}
three days, threatening to shoot him, .
dering his wife, ©
and that Kleese, in order to avoid difficulty, had shut himself up in his
cabin. .On the~ "day of the shooting
Pryor: was going around to the cabin
of Kleese, andthe latter warned him
“to keep away, but he refused to do
80 and’renewed his threats. Kleese
‘told Pryor he.had a shot gun,“and
would use it if he did’not keep back
but the man continued to advance
upon him, when he shot, killing Pryor aS we stated yesterday. Last
Winter, Pryor, with his wife, resided’
back of Glenbrook Park. He. was
engaged in mining there, Her maiaen name was Webster, and before
marriage she lived at Grass Valley.
They went first to Snow Tent and removed from there to Woolsey’s Flat.
James Kivese is a native of Pennsylvania, aged about 32, and has for
“many years resided in Eureka township, where he has borne the reputation of a good citizen. Elijah Pryor,
the deceased, was a native. of Missouri; and resided in Grass Valley
township until within a-year past.

The School at Washington.
The public school at Washington
closed for the Winter, last Tuesday,
with interesting exercises, consisting
of declamations and compositions.
Many visitors were in attendance,
and remarks suitable to the occasion
were made by Judge Freeman.
The school has been under the
charge of Miss Augusta D. Moore for
eight months, and is in excellent
condition, which is owing to an efficient Board of Trustees anda faithIt compares favorably: ful teacher.
with any school in the county. At
the, close of the exercises the teacher
was presented with an elegant photograph album from four of her scholars, Masters John and James Ferfan,
and Charles and John Grissel.

cf Medical unders.
From the period when surgeons applied
their salves to weapons instead of wounds
to the present wide-awake age, the medical
profession has often ucwittingly taken side
with Disease in its conflicts with the human
system. Even yet, in spiteof the teachings
of centuries of experience, some physicians
seriously exhausted by sickness, with powerful evacuants, emetics, salivants, cautharidal plasters, or the lancet. But, providentially, public intelligence is ahead of these
medical fossils, who belong, of right, to the
era of the Crusades! That powerful ally of
nature ix its warfare with the canses of sickness,Hostetter’sStomach Bitters, has opened
the eyes of the masses to the paramount
importance of increasing the vital strength
of the body when menaced by disease. They
understand that when the atmospheric conditions are averse to health—as, for example, in damp, chilly or severely cold weather—it is wise to reinforce the system witha
‘wholesome tonic an2 stimuiant, and thus
enable itto combat and repel the depressing
influence of. an inclement temperature, If
the constitutional and animal powers were
danger, the mortality from °consumption,
bronchitis, chronic rheumatism, &c., would
be much less than it now is. , The cannes
which produce croups, colds, quingey,' diptheria and catarrh seldom affect a strong
ahd active vital system;and of all Vitalizing
preparations, Hostetter’s Bitters has proved
the most efficient. It is not claimed that
this standard tonic is a specific for lung and
throat maladies, as it is for dyspepsia, liver
complaint and intermittents, but-it is unhesitatingly asserted that it is the best
known safeguard against all the atmospheric elements of disease.
