Recent, ONicial Visits Reported by
superintendent Wickes.
The Advancel Grammur School:
at Grass Valley, called the High
School, ranks with that of. Navada
City, Tts teachers.are Frank Power,
Principal, and P. T. Riley, Assistant. It enrolls 59 pupils. An additional number of aboat 20 forming
the lowest class, has been transferred
below stairs to form the highest class
in the old Grammar schoool, which is
taught by M. P. Stone. This grade
pumbers 53 pupils, and ranks “now
one class higher than it did last year.
The work laid= out in the above;
grades comprehends 4 good English
éducation. To secure this the
“Course” is ample, the methods
good and the discipline effective.
The schools of Grass Valley, deserve honorable mention for the unusual attendance reached this term.
The number. of‘ pupils enrol'ed is
1145. The average number belongtendance is 1028. ‘The per cent. of
att ndance on the number belonging
is about 96. Inthe 18 sghools the
average number belonging is about
60.
Grass Valley has neat'y double the
school earollment of Newada City.
As an immense, comparative difference is also observed ‘between the
school census rolls of the places, it is
presumed that thefamilies of Grass
Valley are. the most frwittul, The
most prelific people will, inthe end,
inherit the earth, se-it behooves. Nevada City to bestir itself.
Pleasant Valley School, second
grade, re-opened last week, with 20
pupils, under charge ‘of W. Freeman, The: people of the district
rallied, soon, after their fire, and,
California-like; built a better school‘house than they had before. It is
more roomy, light and airy. It is
better ventilated, and has a fine
brick flue to render it more secure.
Improved desks are expected this
week. The children make out now
with benches. It will take some
time to replace their valuable library
which was burned,

A New Drift Mine. .
The Sierra County Tribune: says:
Fight Forest Oity mining men,under
the name of the Centennial company,
are engaged. in developing a drift
claim at Minnesota, two miles from
Alleghany. They began work there
‘in 1876, by running a tunnel through
hard rock a distance ef 300 feet,
when they became satisfied that
they were at too low ‘a point on the
ridge te tap the channel. Going
some distance above that point they
put a tannel through 200 feet of
barren gravel, and sank an incline
to a depth of 100 feet when they had
to stop on account of being unable
to handle the water. Another tunnel’ is now being driven-65 feet below the second one. It extends
through bedreck for some 409 feet,
about 60 feet being in gravel that
prospects so well as: to give the
owners mich encouragement. No
work has been done sinee-lastJuly,
but it is proposed tostart the mine
again witbout delay, that the rainy
season has set in, ‘During the five
years they have been -at work, the
Centennial company have expended
probab!y not less than $15,009.
Other parties formerly prospected
the ground: to some extent, : and
they obtained good indications:
Very rich pay was obtained a nutnber of years ago from the same
chanuel, farther down the ridge.
