are less than seven years of age,and
the institution has, we understand,
lost their appropriation from the
Legislature: The expenses of sus. “taining such an institution are necessarily heavg,.and-it is worthy of public suppaxt. “Miss Torpey is canvass"ing the county-in aid of the Asylum
and her appeal in behalf of the orphans should everywhere be met with
a liberal response.
The Holidays,

Every day the rounds are madé in
search of appropriate presents, and
the storekeepers ate kept busy ex‘hibiting their goods. As usual we
suppose the grand rush will take
place on Monday-and Tuesday next,
just previous to the decoration of

Ice Making.
The past week has been most favorable for those who are engaged in
the ice business, The thermometer
has stood several degrees below the
freezing point; and at Blue Tent and
Boca and vther places where “the Ice
Company has works, ice must be of
excellent quality. In this.section of
the county a good rain storm would
give better satisfaction than the present cold weather.

A Beautiful Display.
The arrival of the holidays is always a time for our merchants to lay
in stocks of goods suitable for Christmas and New Year's presents. Fore_ most among these is A, Goldsmith,
who is receiving daily by express the
most beautiful goods, suitable for
holiday presents. His store is now
literally crammed with the finest assortment of Dry Goods ever seen in
the mountains. . Here is a few of the
articles to select from if you desire to
give a Christmas gift to your sweetheart, mother, sister, aunt or any
other lady, which are not only beautiful, but ornamental: Russian Sable
Furs, Real Minks, Siberian Squirrels, Alaska Furs, Striped Shawls,
Point Lace Hankerchiefs, Brocha
Shawls, Cloaks, Hats, trimmed and
untrimmed, Ladies’ Skirts, Plain
and Ornamental, and Dress Goods of
every variet¥, from the finest heavy
Ulack Silk down toa bit Calico. His
stock of Fancy Goods is also immense, and taken all together is the
most beautiful assortment of articles
for the holidays ever brought to the
mountains. ‘Thebest of-#~is; that
Mr. Goldsmith intends to sell these
g00ds at the lowest possible rates,
and there is no.reason why the poor¢st person in the county should not
make a useful present, when by cafling on Goldsmith they can buy goods
twenty-five per cent. cheaper than
ty other house in Nevada county.

Medical Blunders.
From the period when eurgeons applied
their salves to weapons inetead of wounds
to the present wide-awake age, the medical
profession has often unwittingly taken side
with Disease in ite conflicts with the human
system. Even yet, in spite of the teachings
of cent=ries of experience, some physicians
believe in depleting their patients, already
seriously exhausted by sickness, with powerful evacuants, emetics, Salivants, cauthar.
idal plasters, or the lancet. But, providentially, public intelligence is ahead of these
medical fossils, who belong, of right, to the
era of the Crusades! That powerful ally of
nature iz its warfare with the canses of siekness,Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, has opened
the eyes of the masses to the paramount
importance of increasing the vital strength
of the body when menaced by disease. They
understand that when the atmospheric conditions are averse to health—as, for example, in damp, chilly or severely cold weather—it is wise to reinforce the system witha
wholesome tonic an2 stimuiant, and thus
enable it to combat and repel the depressing
influence of an inclement temperature..
the constitutional and animal powers were
always thus recruited in the presence of
danger, the mortality from consumption,
bronchitis, chronic rheumatism, &e., would
be much less ‘than it now is. The causes
which produce croups, colds, qninsey, diptheria and catarrh seldom affect a strong
and active vital system; and of all Vitalizing
preparations, Hostetter’s Bitters has proved
the most efficient. It is not claimed that
this standard tonic.is a specific for lung and
throat maladies, as it is for dyspepsia, liver!
hesitatingly aseerted that it is the best
known safeguard against all the atmospheric elements of disease. ,
