Lecture onthe Quartz MUL.
ie £
In San Francisco, on Wednesday
evening, John Richards lectured before the Class in Mechanics of the Institute of Navigation, on ‘‘Gauging
aud Measuring Implements and
Quartz Mills.”, The Call says his remarks regarding quartz mills were
especially interesting, as it is his
opinion, sfter a thorough otudy of
prevailing in the battery quartz mills,
common on this coast, is the one on
which quartz mills will always. be
constructed. He gavefittle favor to
quartz by rollers, which he said
rol'ers have given way in ‘Ear-pe to
stamp mills where the latter have
been introduced. The first quartz
ever worked for the precious meta!s
it contained, was doubtless powdered by hammers. The quartz worked to-day is powdered by hammers,
fora stamp battery is but a lot of
big-hammers ; and so for all time it
will be found that economy in the
application of power to this purpose
will be observed by the use of percussive force,
