A Boy without a Country.
Bome years ago C) » «< Busch, a natuaralized German-Ame:i accompanied by
his pretty Italian wit: sled for France to
accept an engagemer * tenor singer in
one of the opera com): «i» im Paris.
En route a child, who was named Charles
Herman Busch, was born to them. The
mgther died shortly after reaching France _
and the father soon followed her.
The child, having been born on the high
seas, was literally without a country. The
French authorities: refused to administer
upon the father’s estate or provide a guardian
for the infant, because neither of the parents
were citizens of the. Republic.
Consul Shackelford could do nothing without permission from the Government. After
two years’ delay this permission was finally
granted. The American colony in Paris became interested in the child, who is said to
be remarkably bright and precocious, and a
fund has been subscribed sufficient to rear
and educate him until his sixteenth year,
when an effort will be made to appoint
bim acadet at the Naval Academy st Annapolis.
The little fortune of 27,000 francs, the
proceeds of his father’s estate, will be invested for him, and placed at his dis:
when he shall have finished his education.

A French Sailor's Prayer.
Batice Dupont Battre, a-French sailor
from Montreal, hearing music in a. floating chapel on the West side, dropped in
to hear the services. An exhorter had
brought many to their knees, and Christian workers were scattered among the
congregation, soliciting their spiritual]
welfare. Batice thought he must dc
soniething, and remembering the French
eatechism, began repeating it aloud. A
worker put his arm around Batice and
asked: : \
. Why don't you-pray in peo]

‘‘What for I do that?” replied Battre.
“Is God not ole enough? He understands French.”-——[New York Paper.
