FRIDAY MORNING, DEc. 24, 1864.
ty
R&venDY JOHNSON.—This prominent
Marylander and able lawyer, who was'electe4 by the Union men of that State to the
Senate, recently, has brought upon himself
the just indignation of the people be misrep»
resents, by his treachery and base ingratitude. “Since the beginning of the war ‘he
hae pretended to be an earnest supporter of
the Administration and the war, has de.
fiounced slavery as its cause, and by.bis de»
ceptionsecured a place in the United States
Senate: While in the Senate le made al
speéch in which he endeavored to ghow his
long und-consistent, opposition to slavery,
and argued in favor of immediate emancipa«
tion. “With this—record fresh before the
people of the entire country, he returned
home, belied his—prpfessions, opposed the
free State Constitution of Maryland, and
supported. McClellan for the Presidency:—
‘Among his own people he has hever been
thought a statesman, though allaidmit-his
. ability as a lawyer.” Hoe.has ever been very
uncertain, and in lateyears it-has been the
cuatam of the people of Balfimore city, where
he resides, to. burn him 10 effigy nt least
twice a year. He was Attorney General
under Taylor, and he served in that ca pacity
until Taylor died when Fillmore appointed
@ successor.
The following resolution, adopted by the
State Convention of Maryland, which: met in
October for the purpose of nominating a
State ticket, shows what Johnson's people
think of him:
Resolved, Thut we condemn the course
pursued by Hon, Reyerdy Johneon,but—at
the same time congratulate the Whion men
of the State that he has left us und is now
with the traitors of his country, laboring
for theit success; that we are convinced
that we are better-without him, and that it
will not be long before he will desert them
and go over to some new party not yet in
extetence, but which he will espuuse so
, 8000 as it nny have birth; that the opinion
lately announced by him was a pretext for
the rebel voters of the State to swear to wils
“ful perjury in order to defeat the Free State
Constitution; -and that high Heaven will
hold hint~aecountable for the deed; and:we
ineist that the-next Legislature shall call on
him to resign the position which he is misrepresenting.
ELECTORAL CULLEGH.—The California
Presidentiat Electors—Messrs. Samuel
Brannan, J. G. McCallum, W, W. Crane,
Charles Maclay aud Warner Oliver— will
meet at Sacramento on Wednesday, the 7th
day of December, snys the Flag, to prepare .
their votes for the Electoral Cullege, and
select one of their number to go to Washington with the important commission. —
We believe it is generally agreed that Mr.
Branndn will be the member selected to deliver Calfornia’s endoréement of honest
Abraham Lincoln.
GRowTH oF SAN FRANCISCO.~By the
néW Directory, it is shown that the annual
increase of population is at the rate of twelve
and-é half per cent. This would give a population in 1868 of 170,000, and in. 1872, 240.
000. The wealth of the city has increased
in a atill greater ratio. The city bids fair
to become before the end the of century the
. second city in America in population, and.
the firat in Wealth,
SIXTEEN States have accepted the cons

THOMAS SWANN, Governer elect of Mas
ryland, was Mayor of the city of Baltimore
atone time. In his apeeth accepting the
nomination, he said:
“My desire often hae been manifested heres
tofore, to place Maryland m the rank which
her geographical position, het fertile suil,
her inexhaustible mineral resources, aud her
eolatged mantlaciuring eapabilities entitle
her to occupy. The centre of our Unien,
with her star no longer dimmed by the blight
ef slavery [appluuse)}, the future of our
Stete, undera practical and Vyorous develepment of the many facilites Which nature
has thrown in her’way, will be at once extabliwbed ; and not ‘the least of our causes for
thankfulness and congratulation, when we
ehall have emerged from the war in which
Wwe are now engaged, will be that Maryland
will find hereelf in the category vf Free
States.”
