Capinmr--Maxansi—The politicians
and newspaper correspondents are exccoedingly busy making Cabinets for
__ General Grant's ‘administration. One
er ally confident gives 4 new list of
Sidelid ocmsatned to “Roy whe shall
have the seat from the Pacific Coast.—
generally count Oregon and Ne-@ut of the ring, and seem to
think that the Pacific coast appointment mast come from California. Governor Woods. of Oregon, or Senator
Williams would either of them make a
@o0od Secretary of Interior. Eugene
ee John B. Felton, John Conness
and several other Californians have
been mentioned. Senator Nye of Ne_ Vad has also been , but the Cabinet markers of the East, 'thongh they
‘upon persons for other Secs. have. not yet named the
in for the Pacific. We are
inclined to think these wise ones will
find themselves wide of the mark when
the real Cabinet comes to be announced
by Grant. ‘The keen judgment and
correct estimate of men which enabled
Grant to choose his officers and to fix
upor Sherman as a great ‘leader after
hé"had been relieved of command and
was pronounced insane by newspaper
_ Correspondents, will not fail Grant in
.
his new position. He seems to judge
men intuitively and his jadgment never fails. Politicians and correspondents
by selfish motives, and
‘then fori to wite« Cabinet into ex.
for Grant will hardly be suce to settle the account, but no
nde reached. On Saturday
evening these two, with others, engaged
in & game of cards at Ross’ store. AtS
o Leachman got up and went tohie home, and was followed by
ce i pm Diodndier we over
the hag = a in front of the store.
Being busy at the time he did not go
out, and shortly it was announced that
Leachman was killed. The struggle
between the two men was witnessed by
‘e Chinaman, omployed as a cook by
Leachman, andthe weapon used was

‘The following is the description of the
murderer, who is ‘still at large: Age,

inches long on the chin, but short on
the rest of his face ; eyes, blue or gray ;
had on a short eck coat, brown or snuff

Grass VaLLey Censvus.—Jobn Webber, Town Census Marshal, says the

the last ditch of degradation, and jn the
Secretary of State they find a willing
tool for carrying out ‘their infamous
purposes todefeat the will of the people‘of this ‘State as expressed at the
‘ballot box. Such a barefaced, outrageous and contemptible proceeding was
mever undertaken during the palmy
days of Billy Mulligan and Yankee Sullivan, us that of counting in Henly and
counting out Hoffman by the present
Secretary of State. It appears that no
position is too sacred, no office too high
but it may be prostituted to party purposes, and the leaders of the party appland. Ina dark room, away from any
bat his own partizans, Dr. Nichols proceeded to count the votes and to make
up his returns so as to give the election
to Henly, no doubt expecting to have
the certificates issued and signed. by
Governor Haight, who, by the adinis—
sion of the Secretary was one of the
chief devils in the plot, and thus put
the matter beyond reach of the Courts.
They were caught in the scheme just
in time to prevent its consammation.—
As to the question. Every man in the
State knows that only one Hoffman
was a candidate, and every lawyer
knows that a middle initial letter, if
wrong, does not vitiate a vote. The
in-ention of the people was maniiest
therefore and the attempt to defeat
Hoffman by the recent counting or miscounting uf votes, was palpable, infamous and damnable attempt on the
part of those concerned to defeat the
clea: ly expressed will of the people of
this Sate, This attempt fraudulently
to defeat the will of the people deserves
the condemnation of every good citizen.
Fine Woou.—We find in a Vermont
paper, says the Oregonian, a very curious history of the growth of fine wool
and the manner of its introduction in
the United States, Fifty years ago
scarcely a pound of fine wool was
+. grown in the United States, in Great
Britain, or in any other country except
Spain. In 1784, a small flock was sent
tothe Elector Saxony as a present
from the King of Spain, whence the
entire product of Saxony wool, now of
such immense value. In 1809, during . ©
the invasion of Spain by the Fren
some of the valuable crown fi
so'd to raise money,
Consul, Jarvis, at n, purchased
1,400 head and sent them to this country. A portion of this pure and unmixed Merino flock is still to be found
in Vermont at this time. Such was the
origin of the immense flock cf fine wool
sheep in the United States at the present time,
Tae VoTE.—The object of the Secretary of State has been defeated, and
}all the hopes of saving stakes entertained by Democrats have been dashed
by a mandamus trom the District Court.
The Court has issued an order requiring
the Secretary to count all votes cast for
Hoffman. This is in accordance with
all thedecisions in law, and also in
obedience to our own Statute, providing
that “no ticket shall be lost for want of
form, if the Board of Judges can determine to their satisfaction the person for
and the office intended.” There was
only one Hoffman a candidate, and there
could be no question, as the first initial
was his, that all the votes were intended for him. The Secretary of State,
had he not been caught, no doubt intended to make his certificate so that
his party friends might draw their
money. But the cable slipped, and the.
trick was spoiled. Of course the Secretary will gracefully submit to the edict
of the Court and count Hoffman in.
At Lucerne, recently, Queen Victoria
offered a party of ten pin players $400
to abstain from playing on the Sabbath
while she stayed av the hotel. The
landlord refused, rudely adding that
Switzerland was a free country, and
those who disliked their customers
might stay away.
THE expense of putting up a private
telegraph is about $500. There are 50
of them in New York.

It is evident that children have long
