negotiating for the purchase of a
quartz mine in, your vicinity known
as the : , but do not wish to
go to any heavy expeas3 till T have
ascertained all the facts regarding its
reputation among practical miners

I regard as-very reasonable in case
the property is as represented ag ite
owners throagit their agent here.—
Being advised of your reliability and
experience in such matters, I take
the sum of
this matter. Whatever you may say
will be by me regarded as fiual ‘to
the extent thatif the report is favorable I will at once start for your
district with the’ view of making a
personal examination of the property; and if the report be adverse FE will entertain the idea of

of the mine as given'me by the’ parties wishing to sell,”~ Yours Very Respectfully,

to dispose of it to the company that
his correspondent represented. He
wound up his letter by asking that
its contents be kept. strictly confidential, and repeating the advice to
not purchase the -—-— —— mine,
but to buy his own instead. :
Te result of-all this is just what

receipt of the answer was in high
dudgeon and straightway went to
the agent with whom hs’ had been
negotiating and showad it to him.
The latter wa8 finally permitted to
make a copy of both letters and they
wore sent to the disapsointed mine
owners here. Of course the trade

The Free Lance has been recently
sorely afflicted with a series of ‘‘spazzuma,” in the course of which it endeavored to set upthe fact that the:
prevalence of typhoid fever in ‘Grass
Valley is dae to bad drainage. ‘ The
Union of yesterday very quietly,
but nevertheless ‘effectually, punctured its excited cotemporary’s
theory by calling attention to the
much more reasonable one that here
in the ntountains typhoid fever is
due to atmospheric changes more
than anyvhing else, It expiains
that the sickness ‘‘is not localized
to damp, or low situations, or where
there is defective drainage, but
spread generally over the town.”
Some of the worst cases that have
occurred in the county this year have
been found in houses located ou
side hills in sparsely settled reis
giens where the drainage was perfect
and the water pure. We incline to
the belief that the principal cases of
sic cness of this character have been.

dry weather, and the storin Dow .
The break between
the north sido of the. Yuba and
Bloody Run could be constructed
without ‘encountering ‘any heavy
graies. This route would reduce
the present distances from here to
Alleghany and Forest City at
least twelve miles; and to Downie-—
ville, by taking the Gallagher Ranch
road, even more.” mi
