‘LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
CHANCES FoR ForRTUNES.—The country is flooded. with circulars and cards
qost cases-thechances afe all against
tthe purchaser. Julius Greenwald recently received ae letter from: W.» J.
Wheeler & Co., New York, appointing . .
him agent for the sale of cards, at one
wight to buy any article named in his
«ard Gold chains are offered at $5
iand splendid gold watches at $10 apiece,
the ageat being allowed the price of the
card in each case as commission. -Mr.
Greenwald does not of course know
Wheeler & Co., and does not propose to
act as their agent, for the very good
reason that he and every other sensible
man knows that articles cannot be sold
at the prices named if they are as represented. No doubt other persons have
are silly enough to send their money
to this firm, if so, we can only apply
the old adage, “A fool and his money
is soon parted.”
RoBBERY.—On Wednesday night the
Pine street, in the basement of the
house next door to the TRANSCRIPT office, was entered. and robbed. of about
$35 in—silver. Hahn informs. us that
he elosed the saloon about half-past 11
o’elock, and after counting his money
put it into a buckskin purse and left it
inthe drawer. An entrance was effected by knocking off the casement of the
frént door, and this morning both the
back and front doors were found open.
Nothing was disturbed except the money, and it would appear that after break”
ing in at the front door and securing
the eoin the rogue went out at the back
side.
TRIED FoR RospBERY.—Ah Shim,
charged with stealing money from the
money drawer of ‘Naffzigar & Stone, was
tried yesterday before Judge Kendall.
Witnesses testified that they saw him
enter the shop and go behind the meat
block, and saw the motion of hisarm as
though opd@ning the drawer. On examination two five dollar pieces were found
onthe floor. He was prosecuted by District Attorney Caldwell, and defended
by Williams & Johnson.
INSTALLATION.—The following officers were duly installed in Nevada
Lodge, No. 18, F. & A. M.,on Wednesday evening: W.C. Randolph, Master;
M.L. Marsh, 8. W; LJ. Rolfe, J. W;
D; IL. Williamson, Marshal; 8. Cole—
Gray, Tyler.
Heavy Sxnow Storm.—The snow
fall in the mountains has been very
heavy during the late storm. Yesterday
the Washington and Omega stages had
to be left a few miles this side of
Washington, and the passengers came
through on the horses. The snow for
@ distance of six miles averages a
depth of five feet, and it extends to
within a few miles of this city. The
hills above Bannerville were yesterday
covered with snow which could be seen
from town. Snow at Eureka is several
feet deep. The greater part of the
snow has fallen since last Saturday.
Nargrow Escare.—On Wednesday
was. assisting him in cleaning the flame
which rans under the city, came near
losing their lives. They were at work
clearing away the impediments in the
way.of the water, and became chilled,
through. The obstructions were aearty
all removed when the Marshal attempted to get out through a trap door that
opens into Baldwin’s store. He was so.
