An Opium and Whisky Victim's Fate.
Last Monday Marshal Bildrid gz
founda one-eyed chap named Jamos
Parks hanging aroind Chinatown,
sponding his time drinking whisky
and smoking 0j pium, and losked him
up in the new ealaboose. Tho next
morning the prisoner was) turned
loose with the warning that he would
be given ten minutes to leave ‘town
in. Ha\ didn’t go, and Wedissday
night got. into the lock-up again.
Yesterday morning he was tried before Judg2 Garthe and sont to the
County Jail for twanty days. ‘He i:
a depraved looking fellow, an althou sh rather res péctably clothe. was
evidently cut oat for a prison bird.
lt is a pity-though thas tha county
is compelled to support such miserabfe wretches. By organizing the
poiSoners into a chain-gang they
might be male to earn their owa
living, and would appreciate to a
nich greater extent than now the
pesalty of evil doing.

The American Mine.
The Americar is located near the
head of Centerville ravine, about a
half mile north of Grass Valley. It
is a good prospect as far as developed, and promises to make a valuable
property. Work has been. resumed
after a short suspension, in order to
puta house over the shaft ‘and “erect
a horse whim for pum ping and raising rock, The shaft is down 105
feet, and will be sunk to the depth
of 150 féet, when a level will be
turned if the, ledge at* that depth
continues its present favorable appearance. The ledge is strong, and
shows finely in a good quality of sulphurets. The house built over the
shaft is large, containing room. for
the whim, a forge and stable. C.
