in order to divert public attention

It ie hard to believe that so experi“enced end astute # journalist as is at

The Cox Family's Poverty
Speaking of the Cox-McLaughlin
case, the Report says: The distress
of the Cox family was the direst. of
all distress—-the distress of those
who are vdor but proud; who suffer
and make no sign; and ‘all, of whose
suffering is due to ernel injustice and
flagrant wrong. But the delicately
reared Southern wife fad a good
Southern heart inher, and the spirit
of their father and mother was) in
the children, and they held their
heads well up. Though there might
be pinching at home, there wag no
complaining abroad; and they moved
iu San Francisco's best society in the
gowns they had made themselves,
more respected than nine-tenths of
those who make the fortunes of modiates. It was a long and bitter struggle, relation of which is enongh. to .
bring tears to the eyes; woud the
glory of it was that so few knew. it.
Only the most intimate friends of
the Cox family knew that they astfffered; but it is likely to all come
out now, and itis to be hoped it
will.
Cox is not likely to want for defenders, if he needs any. Dan Voorhees has telegraphed offering to come
out here and defend him and numerous other proffers of assistance have
come from old comrades in the East,
baggage here, but he didn’t catch
to waken.
