LOCAL AFFAIRS, —
‘ Rain— Mining.
“Snfficient rain has fallen to enable
every placer mining claim in the
county to start up. All the miners in
this vicinity have commenced washing, and thousands of dollars will be
taken out of mines that have not
been worked in many -years. At
Omega, all the companies commenced
operations on Tuesday last. The
Quaker Hiil -conypanies are driving
ahead, and from everywhere we learn
the glad tidings that there is plenty
of water for present purposes. We
hope the weather agent will continue
to keep the gates open, for if there is
anyfmusic i in, Words, tojour ear, it is
from the miners that they, have plenty of water. There is one thing we
would suggest, however, (we trust
from.the bottom of our heart that we
may uot. be considered a grumbler, )
if the weather would become a little
colder, and continue to rain for weeks
longer, it would suit all of us to a
dot. If our hint is heeded, the celd
weather would have the effect of
dropping snow on the mountains instead of rain, and the. consequence
would be that placer diggings could
be worked as late as August next.
We simply threw ont the suggestion
to whom.1t nar eoncorn.

‘Wadden Rise.
On Wednesday there was a sudden
rise it the South Yuba, supposed to
have been occasioned by. the breaking of a dum at some ob of the large
reservoirs in the mowntafis:”
Washington, the tiver rose S¢ven feet
ina few minutes, remained up’ an
hour and a half or two hours, when
it fell treatty to its former level. Severt] Chinese'cabins were washed
away near Washlngton, the oceut
pants barely -having time to escape.
We are sorry.to learn that the:heavy
rains of, the storm heave: done some
. Injury to the ditches onthe San Juan
ridge. Some stone ballast from the
dam of the Bloomfield Gravel Co.,
now in course of coustruction on
Canyon Creek, was washed out, and a
few boxes of their flume were carried
away. “Pheir lowet sources of water
drainage will, however, afford them
ample supply for their ditch until
the drainage to their frame can’ ‘be
repaired.
Stand From Under.
We would warn our friends at Sac-.
ramento, Marysville and fhe édw
counties, that all the streams up here
are wide awake and booming, and
they: had better look out for their
earthly goods, as there is mischief {ni . .
the cufrents that are speeding quickly in that direction. The water is
doing so much good in the mining
region’that our miners can Wweéll afford to pay all €amages done below,
for the sake of having the water t6
work with above.
