mi eee : on which an election is held through-. +, 4ers—that—Prof— “Paytor, who-is cd The Daily Transcript NEVADA CITY. CAL. aes — 5 Friday, December 22, 1876. Not. Economy. Itis not always economy to accept the lowest bid for work on public improvements, and it certainly isnot in public road matters. As the law now stands, the Supervisors of road districts are compelled" to accept the lowest bid, notwithstanding they may know the “amount bid will not allow a contractor to.make the repairs needed to make passable . re cS = vce _We know of a road contract. which was let for $150 per year, where the work’ absolutely nécessa. ry would be worth $600. Of course the contractor is ‘not expected to Jose on his contract, and the result is, the roads‘are left in an almost impassable conditign. The lowest bid is not the cheapest. for the county. The only way to remedy the evil is for Supervisors to specify what repairs are necessary before letting the ebntract, aud then’ make — every contrsetot rigidly adbere to . its terms. Money jodiciously expended on roads is a good investment for the people. Christmas Gifts. We bave noticed many sly purchases of little souveneirs during the past week, and-sappuse they will go to make the hearts of some one glad about Christmas time. wishes and intends+to give something kome time this month, The gift to 4 friend at Christmas time is always} keenly appreciated. Articles of ornament or use can be found at the different stores in town, as may be on by consulting our advertising’ columns. We hope every one will hang up stockings, and we hope that ‘each one will be filled to the top with choice presents, no matterif they ate as long as ‘some that may be seen displayed at our dry goods stores. —> +e ---___—_, Holidays, Holidays, within the .meaning: of the Political Code of this State, are: Every Sunday, the first day of January, the twenty-second day of February, the Fourth of July, the twenty-fifth day of December, every day out the State, and every duy appointed by the President of the United States, or by the Governor of this State, for a public fast, thanksgiving, or holiday. The Gags Valley Union has the to ‘eoncerning the proposed Narrow Gauge road from that place to San Jyan: ‘‘We mentioned, yesterday, that there was considerable talk apd figuring about a 24 inch gener railyoad from this place to Juan North. There has been still more talk about the matter since the publication of our little item, This town ought to have that road, and oan afford to have it. Mining business bas aot been as good here for eight years as it is at the present time, and the successful prospecting that is going on gives indication of still more wealth and prosperity in the next Summer. The figures of careful and competent mea say that the proposed narrow gauge railroad to San Juan will pay as an investnient. Tt will sure by addin to the business of 5 Aig ec The talk upon the subject is serious, and we believe will result in the construction, of the road. Of course many will laugh at the project, but maby did that when ibe road to * Colfax wes first mentioned us 4 possibility. Everybody . _Lecal Brevities. Messrs. Wetmore, Schmittburg, Bailey and Huffman, with Mark on Wednesday evening, from a two day’s hunt in the vicinity of Round Tent, about 20 miles below here, . bringing with them an abandang of gume. They killedthree dozen quails, eleven hare and about the same number of gray squirrels. Wetmore also all arranged how he would have: it served up for his own private tooth. On the return of the pirty, they deposited their game bags in front of Schmittburg’s saloon, while they went in to ‘‘smile,’’ and some one taanazed to-s-teal-Wetmore’sduck“Hé says he don’t care anything about the duck, but he’d “lie to fiad the that stole it,”’ * The Mace combination show did uot draw as well as expected here, and yesterday we could find mo one who attended it. A small house and a small purse was not enough to induce the champion to allow his snoot to be busted, orto plant any ‘‘sidewinders”’ in the bread basket of the “favorite pupil’ of Heenan. The sparring, however, what there was of it, showed that the wearer of the champion belt is master of his profession. .Prof. Taylor performed « few of his wonderful feats, and the andience coincide with all who witnessed his entertainmeénts. on previous evenings, in pronouncing him the chief among sleight-of-hand performers. A large delegation of the Masonic fraternity came up from Grass Valley on Wednesday evening last to attend the Lodge in this city, and assist in conferring the Master Mason’s degree. After the ceremounies were concluded, the company repairedto the ante-room, where refreshments were served. Social chat, toasts, hand-shaking, interspersed with singing pecaliar to the craft were indulged in for an hour or so, sndall went home happy. This interchange between Lodges of. different towns, by the various Orders would increase the sociability of the metnbers, besides serving as a cement to unite the brotherhood_mora _ close-. ly, thereby increasing the objects fo:: which they are banded together. We wish toinform our San Juan now visiting them, gives the best show of the kind now traveling. He is the cleverest performer in the business, and deserves liberal patronage. One of George $Howe’s customers took a fine set of jewelry off the show case in his store at Gruss Valley the other day, and he proposes to print the fellow if he does not return it; Now Rufe, we advise you to do as requested, and not have anything said about it in the other paper, . Dex} Ridley and Tom Hicks went down to the piains s week ago fora hunt. They returned day before yesterday and brought what few fowls they had left, after satisfyin their longing for ‘‘goose stuffed =r sage."’ About a hundred of their birds can be sven at Shockan’s poultry stand in the Transcrirt block. The Grass Valley Union has peached. The editor has turned States evidence against us. “It will bea long time before we go out ‘‘disturbing”’ Christmas turkeys on dark nights with him again. The Truckee Republican say the ice harvest has commenced at Prosthick, and is as clear and smooth as glass. People have been setting their
watches by the arrival of Cunningbam's stages for some time. They never vary a minute from schedule time. © : Wagon loads of turkeys are arriving from the ranches below here. No one need go hungry during the holidays, from present appearances, Whicht “D,” writing from this city to the Sacramento Bee suggests an amendment to the Code in reference to registration. He would have vote, only those who pay taxes. His theory revives the old question. If, under such a law, a man who owns a jackass worth $25 is allowed to vote, and another equally as good a man who does not own one, cannot vote, which does the voting; the man or the jackass? ua Home Made Jewelry. 18 carats fine, at Luetje & Brand's, Broad street, Nevada City, d20-4t Shaver as Jehu, returned to thiscity bagged a fine teal duck, and'had it! ser Creek.
