air that announces it. Its atmos.

days back. Those who are too ob‘tase to be affected by the subtile in:
fluence, whatever it is, have but to
walk the streets during the, pleasant
December days, look into the. shop
windows, and watch the throng of
earnest investigators and happy purchasers, Talfour once saidin reference to Lady Holland, that the su. . preme art of being happy consisted
_. in making others happy. It is not an
eriginal idea, by any means, but it
serves to explain the visible cheeriness that pervades the present season. The anticipation of the pleasure'to be. given brightens the popular countenance, and gives the observer’a better impressien of human
nature than he is liable to form at
other times of the year. The aggregate amount of close caloulation that
is going on in busy heads throughout

Of presents from the available sums
‘. Of money is simply stupenduous. It
requires a clear. head, as well as a}:
Spartan determination, not to become distracted by the incongruity
presented between the power of doing and opportunities of doing if the
money Were only plentiful enough,
The shops were never more alluring.
Tt seem as if human, ingenuity and
taste could go no farther than it now
goes in the direction of furnishing
things of beauty and attractiveness
for Christmas presents. A wealth
of labor and artistic talent has’ been
displayed in the production of chil:
dren’s toys, which speaks well for
humanity. There never would have
been such an outcome if there. was
not-a demand for it. The pleasure
of giving children pleasure is ‘‘sui
generis,” It is said that there is no
sane villain se depraved that he will
not be moved by a-baby’s smile.
My King,” she touched a true . and
. powerful, ‘ahora. No conqueror ever
exacted tribute more surely than do
the children from their elders, and
the better and purer the elders, the
more profusely is the tribute paid.
The pleasure which the merry
Christmastide sheds upon ‘the children is reflected back upon society
with redoubled power. The multiplicity of the toys of the present
day is the sign of theREIGN OF THE CHILDREN,
They have brought veritable genius
to their feet, and count the capital
devoted to them by the. millions,
The giving of . presents among eur
older people does not take the form
of tribute to such an extent as giving to children. “The demand is less
imperious and can be easily resisted
‘It becomes voluntary and is the expression of matured respect'and affection. It relieves the dull repression and coldness which grown people seemed to think it undignified to
depart from in their daily and plodding life. A good many peeple want
to give others some token of their esteem and tenderness, but are actually ashamed to give away. to what
they are afraid will look like weakness. Happily these are not predominant, but there is more or less
of.a general tendency in that direction. Mankind is a wonderfully
stiff organization. It seems to be
the average individual’s ambition to
make himself as much like a machine as possible and to repress eyery spark of sentiment which will expose the fact that he bassoul. Christmas gives him an excuse to relax a
little, He may let loose sowe practical expression of friendship, if he

There is nothing men ought to be so
proud of as the power of exercising
true*friendship and sympathy; there
is nothing they are:
MORE CAREFUL ABOUT
Than to repress any expression ot
tenderness for each other—as a rule,
There is, of course, a certain amount
of perfanctory present-giving—giving with no heart in it—but fortunately this is very much in the minority. Christmas is sound at the
core. It is a salutary relaxation, when natural eloquence can,
for once in the year at least, find its
vent. It isa little holiday for the
emotions that furnish the poetry of
the race, The decoration and ban‘ners of Christmas are the symbols of
that amity which is the underlying
principle.of civilization. There can
be no progress without co-operation,
and there can be notrue co-operation
without the spirit of love which men
seem so much ashamed of confessing,
These Christmas times have their
substantial value therefore. They
are seasons of sentiment, of gladness
and relaxation, but they mark the
existence of the heaven of human
development. And what a blank in
in the year would be left without
them ! There is no use in going be/neath the surface to, begayne convincod of the good 1! y isiu the brightd Christikea are not’ enter: di in pers cette, Like the

days that precede Christmas, and
They give exercise to the best moral
faculties and serve to strengthen the

the toys laugh, and the gems sparkle,

Theatre next week, opening on Monday evening with the new comedy

Boyd has played several engagements in this city and is a popular
favorite. The Modesto News of the

troupe has heen performing at ‘this
place the present week. They have
drawn crowded houses each night.
Their acting has given general satis‘faction. In the several plays they

In the name of suffering humanity,
we request, all physicians to try Ammen’s Cough Syrup, then they will
prescribe it for their patients who
are troubled with coughs, colds and
diseaser for which it is recommended. Many doctors who are opposed
to patent medicines prescribe this
remedy ; the druggist simply changes the contents into another bottle,
and the patient is none the wiser,
while the physician gets the credit
for the cure, which always follows
where a cure is possible. “Ask your
druggist to show you a large bottle,
