NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA,
LOCAL INTELLIGENCE,
. Our ASSEMBLYMEN.—Sam. T. Oates
made a speech in: the Assembly on Monday in favor of opening the Public
Lands to settlement by the laboring
classes of the State. Sam. has earned
his reputation as a working man at the}
forge and. bellows, and has a right,
therefore, to speak for this class. His
speech, which is reported in full in the
Reporter, is well worth the reading.
T. A. Slicer has made his first strike
for Dewoeracy in the congratulation of
‘Tennessee for rejecting the Fifteenth
The resolutions. were
passed,-notwithstanding some member
“didn’t see what this Legislature had
to. do with Tennessee.”
Mr. King a few days since “chipped
in” on appointments, stating in effect
that he noticed generally when attaches
were increased some pet was to be provided for, aad he complained that Nevada, though it hud the third delegation on the floor, hadn’t got a sniff at
anything.
Mr, Hawley has not yet been heard
from excépt in the “ayes” and “noes”
owhen called.

‘A Sap CasE.—A few days since, a
mother called upon an officer to know
ifshe could not have her son, aged .
fifteen or sixteen, sent to the Reform
She is a widow and states that
her boy, until recently, has been a
good and dutiful son, but that hewas
led off by vicious companions, and now
at an age when he might be of help to
her, he has left his home and refuses to
return. If the Industrial School at
San Francisco receives State aid, our
Representatives should make it a condition that it be opened’ for such cases
as this. We understand that an effort
will be made to require the boy to; re‘turn to his mother and punish those
who are guilty of harboring him.
Nor too Fast.—The Grass Valley
Union suggests an early call fora railToad meeting. The time has not yet
arrived for such a meeting. The in. dueements must he first ascertained, as
well as the extent to which aid will be
extended by those whose lines are to
be benefitted. These matters require
time. In addition to this, the subject
‘ ought first to be talked among the peo
ple. Hold on until’we get up steam,
and then a public meeting may be called.
Tae Fire PLues.—For two days
past Chief Engineer Canfield has been
. *ngaged in opening the vents of the
fire plugs and protecting them by pack_
ig against the cold, in order to pre“" Yent them from treezing. Yesterday
morning all the plugs in which. the
Vents. were closed were found to be
Ulocked up by ice. Thig precaution
renders them ready for use in case of
fire,

ROBBERY.—The cabin of John Bryan,
situated this side of the Eureka mine,
was entered Saturday night, by some
thief, who pried open the back door.
Two pair of boots, bed clothes, hat,
shoes, tobacco, pipes, etc., were taken
away. The thief would probably have
taken a large cook stove, but was unable to, get away with it. This is the
second time “Uncle John” has been
called upon. by these light-fingered
gentry, and he says he is satisfied to be
}let alone in the future. The loss is
probably about $75. So says the Wational. :

day of January, 1870:
The Vital Statistics of California
Show that periodical. fevers and acute and
chronic disorders of the stomach and bowels,
are among the most prominent and fatal diseases in this State. Disobedience to the laws
of health, as regards diet; the use of pernicious stimulants ; and the wear and tear ef
business excitement, and of ‘‘fast life’ generthese maladies in our. cities; while in the interior, and especially ine :be gold yleiang dis
tricts, they are chiefly due to malaria, unwholesome water, ang the exposure and privation incident to life in new settlements
and mining camps. Now, IT 18 A FACT that it
isas possible to protect the human system
againgt these maladies, as to guard life and
property against the incursions of assassins
andthe thieves. Strengthen the vital organization wiih HOSTETTER’S ane BIT:
TERS, and it becomes as capable of rgsisting
the active -principle of epidemic or endemic
disease, as a fire proof safe is of resisting the
action ofcombustiun. This is.the experience
ofthousands.<whe have remained unscathed
by malarious disorders in the'sickliest seazons, while their neighbors, who neglected to
tone and regulate their systems with this unequalled -medicinial stimulant, have fallen
thick and fast around them, Weakness invites disease. Vigor repels it. Help nature
to fight the good fight with infection, whether
it be in the air, the water, or the s il, with
this matchless preparation—a compound of
the rarest vegetable extracts with the pures
of all diffusive stimulants.
Tae Eventnc Tripune. — The
Daily Bvening Tribune has appeared in
San Francisco. Jack Stratman is editthat’ vigorous order denominated “red
hot.” It looks well, reads well aad
from all appearances will. make it
warm forsome of its cohtemporaries at
