‘NEVADA CITY.
LOCAL ITEMS.
Meadow Lake.
We.have interviewed Capt. Hanly,
who come'through from Meadow Lake
and arrived in this city on Wednesday.
He left four feet of snow at Meadow
Lake and came to Hunnefaath’s old
place, within nine miley of this city, on
snow shoes.
The mining prospects at Meadow
Lake are exceedingly encouraging
The Grant mine at Carlile is yielding
handsomely. The eight stamp mill
erected by Squire and Pattison last
Fall has been running constantly until
the pipes supplying the mill, the batteries, and everything froze up. Such
extremely cold weather was never before known in the district. The mine
has been opened to the depth of 100
feet, and the rock pays about $12 te
the ton in free gold, and yields a large
amount of rich sulphurets. The ledge
is three feet thick, and with the excellent facilities for ‘working will yield a
handsome profit. In the Spring it is
proposed to add eight more stamps to
the mill.
The Mohawk and Montreal mill has
been workiug rock from the Greenhorn
mine. About 120 tons worked paid
$23 per ton,
The Samarny, owned by Squires,
Pattison & Co., is located a quarter of
a mile from the Grant. The ledge at
14 feet below the surface yields well,
and on the surface the croppings, 10 /
feet wide, can be traced 1,000 feet.—
from this ledge will be crushed
in the Spring.
The Scoodiac is owned by Hanly &
Co., and located near the Mohawk and
Montreal. The ledge is three feet wide
n top*and prospects well.
At Ossaville, near the town of Meadow
Lake, Bull & Culbertson have fitted up
a mill and are working three or four
ledges, which give promise of great
richness.
The prospects of the district are ex—
evedingly flattering. Many capitalists
of San Francisco have visited the district and are becoming interested. General Connor has important interests,
andin the Spring it is expected that
new enterprises will be opened up.
Road Improvement.
Peter Purdon, who owns Black’s old
crossing and road between this city
and San Juan, has been doing # good
work in the way of road improvement,
The bridge has been entirely remoddled. The timbers, braces and bolts
are of the most substantial character,
and the structure is better than any
building a new grade on this side,
which it is expected will be completed
‘by the first of May. This grade leaves
the present[ road at Rock Creek,
and the bridge is reached by an easy
desceat and all the heavy grading of
the old road avoided. When this road
is completed, the freight and travel
from the ridge will increase considerably.
A Big Seal.
In examining the records in the
County Recorder s office yesterday, we
came across an acknowledgement taken
by a Pennsylvania Justice of the Peace,
in witness whereof he says: “Ido affix
my name and office with the seal of the
State.” The big seal however don’t
appear and we were perfectly willing
to take the word of the Justice and his
office for the seal.
Quartz Mining Sill.
We publish to-day Stewart’s bill in
reference te titles to quartz mines. It
will be found interesting to all cons
cerned in mining in this county.
The Heathen Chimee.)
We have received acopy of Bret
Harte’s Heathen Chinee, arranged as
a song and chorus by Chas. Towner.
Itis published:by Root & Cady of Chicago, and is. one ef the best things pubwho know the merit of Harte, will be

progressive movements of the day, to
visit him at his rooms. Dr. Smith commenced a course of lectures last evening which was free to all. The lec~

Faith Well Founded.
In old times, at the commencement of
every season, it was the fashion to takea
strong cathartic as a safeguard against a
change of temperature. It was a worse than
senseless practice. The people of our day
understand the matter better. Instead of
depleting the system they reinforce it. In the
method they adopt they exhibit a wise discrimination, Instead of resorting to the
vitiated stimulanta of commerce, or any of
the compounds derived from them, they put
orant procurable in the market—Hostetter’s
Stomach Bitters. Their faith is well founded.
Never has any tonic medicine been prepared
with such scrupulous precision and conscien—
tious crre. It is a vegetable compound of
which eyery ingredient is sound, wholesome
and MEDICINAL in the true sense of the word.
Now, we have three prominent national complaints. One-half of the adult population of
the United States suffer more or less, either
frem diseases of the stemach, derangements
of the liver, or affections ofthe kidneys. in
no other land under Heaven are these maladies so general as in this country, and Hostetter's Bitters is a specific for them all, upless
organic in their origin, and, therefore, beyond
cure. And let those who are fortunate.
enough so be exempt from them at present
understand one great fact, viz: than an occasional use of this vitalizing tonic will as cer~
tainly prevent them as the sun will prevent
the earth from freezing where its genial
beams descend, SS
