Why Do They.Snub Himt
One Samuel J. Tilden, whilom
candidate of the Democratic party
for the htghest office within the gift
of the people ot the United States,
receives aa occasional notice ‘from
Xepiiblican newapapers—the organs
“of the unterrified leaving him severely alone, asa rule. When a short
time sincé somehody said that there
were rumors afloat concerning the
ousting of Mz. Hayes from the Presidential chair, and the subsequent
installing ef Mr. Tilden in his
stead, the Democratic press actually
sat back on its haunches and laughed outright. To the majority ot the
-» editorial. fraternity who had labored
so heartily and so long for the success of the unwashed, there was
something so ludicrous in this
threatened onslaught of “Samivel ”
and his colorts who were to thus seek
redress for the “ wrongs”: to which
they had been _ compelled to
bow their proud necks, that the
knights of thé quill on ‘that’ side of
the question forgot to say a word
about it.
is that the Democrats of the United
_ States do not have one iota of interest as to whether Mr. Tilden has or
has not been~‘“‘ wronged.” ‘They
have giggea back on him with the
yvreatest degree of coolness imaginaIn Rutherford B. Hayes they
recognize the right man in the right
place, the one whom, above-all oth~ ets is calculated to lead the country
through the troublous Limes of the
their doctrine,
_ As the Louisville Courier-Journal
bluntly remarks, ““ We [the Democrats. will receive, ra of Mr. Hayes’
» favors thankfally, but shall be very
careful tovote:-the Democratic
ticket,” . They do not want, Tilden,
but they do want “ spoils.” “Every
energy is now being bent in the direction of remodeling the party and
establishing it, upon a firmer political basis than ever. Everything
seems to have conspired to their
assistance since the last election, and
now all they ask is that in 1880 their
, nominee will be the accepted candidate. He will be one who
will Jook out for tlieir interests in tbe direction of all
that may enhance their opportuni-«
ties for personal aggrandizement, Mr,
they
seem to have concluded. Samuel J.,
is said by his friends, to be an hon«st man. .Then we wonder why the
Democracy snubs him 80 ?.
The Income Tax. x
A Herald’s Washington dispatch
gays: A sub-Committee of Ways
and Means wili probably report to
the who.e Committee a proposition
to re-impose the income tax, the
olyect being to obtain by this means
meet
a decrease of tobacco tax and one ‘or +
swo other, internal taxes. The are:
gument made in favor ct the income,
tax is that the Mastern-seaboard and
Middle States now pay far less inter_mal tax than‘the Northwestern and
Southern States ; that property and
production is overtaxed in these latter, compared with the burdens
borne by the former, and that an income tax would equalize the load.
Western and Southern members of
the House very generally favor the
income tax, and the measure is
especially strong among Northwestern members, and who say that
Government bonds are almost all
all owned in the seaboard: States ;
that these areexempt from taxation .
aod that-anincome tax is the. only
way to reach bondholders,

Shrimps.
We havé searched the records of
the Democratic party for a spark of
purity, tried to find at least one argument in favor of unrestricted Chinese
immigration, and even in our younger days essayed to make a whistle
from a pig’s tail; bpt that in our old
age we should have endeavored to
satisfy our appetite by devouring a
half-bushel of shrimps, we consider

: About Christmas.
Inthe TRANSCRIPT of Tuesday
morning next we will tell old andl
young all about Christmas; its origin, growth, and what it is good for
now-a-days. ee
The Coming Festivities.
Proparations on an extended scale
are being made jor the observance
of Christmas at the various churches in a manner which cannot but
carry joy to the hearta of the little
ones. Pity for them that “Santa
Claus” does not really havea being,
so that the awakening of after years.
would not destroy the beautiful illusion.

Two boys named Dolan and Richards -were accidentally skot at

vircumstances which forcibly illustrate the totsl unreliability of firearms at alltimes. They were playing ina slaugbter-house where some
cattle were being killed. The butcher’s pistol having been laid to one
side, accidentally fell to the ground
and was discharged, the bull tearing
one of the boys toes off, and then
passing into an ankle of the other.
