SATURDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 24.
FALSE PRETENSES.—Robert Battersby
was arrested in San Francisco, and brought‘
to this city, charged “with obtaining money
by fraud. The facts, as far as we are able
‘to obtaiti them, are the follbwing : Battersby came to this city, in October last, ‘from
-Witginia, and présented a cheek drawn by a
man named Renard, of San Francisco, upon
Cc. I. Hutchinson, of Virginia. Battetsby f*
represented that hevha d:been-te the Truckée,
was called to San Francisco on business, and
had not time to wait’ until the check could
be presented to Hutchinson. As he wus
vouched for as an honest man‘ by a citizen of
this place, Messrs. Muckie “& Co. paid
the check, givin $60, and the balanee—the
check being for $2(0—in-a bill on San Francisco. Fhe check was sent for collection
and-pretésted, and Battersby was arrested
for fraud. A preliminary examination was
held before Judge Smith*:yesterday. and the
matter was taken under advisement until
to-day. Jos. Kutz appeared for the defend
ant,‘and David Belden and T. P. Hawley
fo® the prosecution. .,. .
Battersby was formerly a resident of San
Juan in this county, and is Vice President of
the “White Man’s Colony” being organized
in San Francisco by Zack. Montgomery and
Beriah Brown, for the purpose of settling in
Mexico. .#rom this éolony all negroes,
mongolians, and@ther inferior races are to
‘be excluded ; it is therefore an outrage (?)
that the Vice President should be compelled
to board in the county jail and eat at the
same table with a Chinaman.
THE PLaces TO BUy.—The day has arrived. for purchasing Christmas goods, and
our merchants have enough to supply all.
. George R. Crawford, on Pine street, has
afine lot of photograph albums and faney
goods suitable for the occasion.
L. Phillips, on Broad street, has a large
stock of all kinds‘of toys. ‘i a ebog
A. Baruh, oti Pine street, has also a large
. stock of toys. ;
Nick _Slocovich has a-xplendid stock of
fruit of all kinds, and. also a fine edfiection of’
toys: ar 5 :
TURKEYS.—Bulacker & ‘Aumer, just below the Transcript office, have received a
splendid lot of turkeys for Christmas.—
They are a splendid: lot, some of them weighing eighteen pounds each.
THe Curistmas TReE.—The little folks
are looking forward for a joyous time to-night.
They all expect that Santa Claus will bestow
his gifts upon them, and we do net. think they
will be disappointed. We hope that no
pains will be spared by parents to make the
little ones happy, and that the Committee, in
every case where provision is not made by
parents, willsee that children are not disappointed. The:Jaities were out colleeting
yesterday, for the purpose of receiving
money to buy presents for poor children, and
we have no doubt that they will provide for
all. A Committee will be on hand at the
Baptist Church all day, for the purpose of
receiving presents designed for the Tree, and
it is desirable that all should be sent in during the morning, so that ample time will be
given for decorations. Write the names in
ink, and be sure and writeintelligibly. . 4
A Goop APPoINTMENT.—James Patten,
Eaq., has received the appointment of Postmaster at Columbia Hill. This is a good
appointment. Mr. Patten is a true Union
man, and has the confidence of allin the
neighborhood where he lives.
PosTaL Cuance.—E. J. Cranston has
received the appointment of Postmaster at
Moore’s Fiat.
For CHRISTMAS.—Those who desire to
procure something nice for Christmas, should
go and examine Julins Dréy fase’ stock, on
Pine street. . He hasa large and magnificent
stock of candy ornaments, cakes, candies
ofall kinds, fancy and plain, alBof the best
quality and at low rates,
THANKS.—We are indebted to, Sam.
Lewis for late Kentucky and Missouri papers,
and to Alvah Mulloy, age of Langton’
Express, for Nevada pest. ——
