WHITE AND CoLoRED ScHOLARS.— Evidently, the attempts’ in New Or. leans to force the white and colored pupils to be educated together, in the sameschools, will not provea success. People may asstime to bé philosc phers and scout the idea thet prejudice should ever be considered in framing laws and administering government; but the prejudice will remain, 1evertheless. ed people prove more numerous as voters, of course they can, provided they are represented in’ the Legislature in proportion to’ their voting “power, insist and establish,‘ by legislation, statutes that shall abolish all distinction, as to -color, in’ the attendance and’ ‘instruetion of. the young. But law cannot destroy prejudice. That may be all wrong. We do not believe itis. The colored person has a. prejudice in favor . of his own race, and we believe that were he left to himbeif,; instead of “ta-the influence of the white mischiéf-maker, ‘he ‘would prefer that his children . should be educated separate from the. whites. ce But he has a claim to the privileges-of the Common School system where it exists. Having been made ‘a freeman, he should have the means of education for his children, for the safety, perpetuity and success of the Government depends upon the in* telligence of the people whose votes -make law-givers, und, indirectly, the laws. + The colored children have acquired the right to be educated. Bat ‘why aud in what. exists the necesgity to educate the two classes in the same schouls? We know thata strong feeling, call it prejudice, if you please, exists in the minds of white ‘partuts and children against this school amalgamation. We think a somewhat similar prejudice exists, with colored people. Why, then, ate tempt. impossibilities?. Why -ruin the system and stir up and create antagonisms and servile war.in a useless. devotion to an idea that can never. be manufactnréd. into fact? It would be fust about as’ chedp to support separate schools, and.thus avoid all the troubles present and impending. —Alta. ~s :#Counterfeit half-dollars of the date of 1872 and 1873 ure being~ cir* culated through the State in large numbers. 0 Joun Morrissey’s agent has reited @ fine house at Jacksonville, Fl da, and that town now understands its great prospects as a: Winter re~ sort.
